coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved by the government of Swabia on March 24, 1987.

Description : “Split by silver and blue, topped with a lowered wave bar split by black and gold; in front a black patriarchal cross on which a narrow silver double bar cross is placed, behind a golden heraldic lily over a lying silver crescent moon. "

The cross in the front part of the coat of arms is reminiscent of the pilgrimage to the Holy Cross near Pless, which has been one of the most popular pilgrimages in the Central Swabian region since the 17th century. The silver cross is the symbol of the Lower Hospital of Memmingen, which has been wealthy in the municipality since the Middle Ages. In 1542 the Unterhospital acquired the entire rule of Pleß, but sold it to Anton Fugger in 1547. The lily from the Fugger coat of arms commemorates the new rulers who sold the village to the Buxheim Charterhouse in 1719. The moon is taken from the crest of the Charterhouse. The silver-blue tinging of the coat of arms reminds of the very early rights of the dukes and electors of Bavaria in the municipality, for example as fiefs of the village court in Pless. The wave bar indicates the location of the municipality on the Iller, which is the border river between Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Theodor Goerge from Freising.

flag

The flag is striped blue and yellow with the municipal coat of arms.

Worth seeing

South facade of St. Gordian and St. Epimachus
  • Parish church of St. Gordian and Epimach from 1766/67, probably the most important village church in the Memmingen area
  • Pilgrimage church of the Holy Cross from 1665; the so-called Kreuzkapelle with statues by Ignaz Waibl is located on a formerly open floor between Pless and Fellheim. The expiatory foot pilgrimage to the Holy Cross of Pless was reintroduced in 1973. It begins in the parish church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Fellheim to an allegedly miraculous cross in the Kreuzkapelle, three kilometers away, in the district of Pless. The pilgrimage, in which up to 3,000 pilgrims from the Illertal and the surrounding area take part, takes place on the second Monday evening before sunset from May to October.
