Woringen is a municipality in the Swabian district of Unterallgäu and a member of the Bad Grönenbach administrative community .

Woringen is located in the Donau-Iller region in Upper Swabia and borders the city of Memmingen .

geology

The Zeller Bach , which rises near Sommersberg and flows into the Memminger Ach in Memmingen, flows through Woringen from south to north . The Zeller Bach was reopened in the course of the village renewal and can now be seen in large parts again within Woringen.

history

Until the 19th century

In 948 the place was mentioned for the first time in a document about the donation to the monastery in Kempten. The Ravensburger bourgeois family Möttelin , called von Rappenstein, acquired rule in Woringen in 1417. The castle and the village came to the Free Imperial City of Memmingen in 1516 . Woringen became so Protestant, only the Abbey subjects in the village remained Catholic. In 1547 Memmingen sold the village to the Unterhospital Foundation . Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 the place belongs to Bavaria. In 1806 the Woringen Martinskirche was demolished; the associated Woringen cemetery is still preserved. With the community edict of 1818 , today's political community was created. In 1863 the Memmingen – Kempten railway line was opened with Woringen station, which no longer exists.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved by the government of Swabia on December 27, 1974.

The historical rule of Woringen was owned by the Ravensburger patrician family Möttelin zu Rappenstein, who used the raven as a speaking coat of arms. In 1516 the imperial city of Memmingen acquired the manorial rights in Woringen and sold them to the Unterhospital in Memmingen in 1547, in whose possession they remained until the secularization in 1803. This is expressed heraldically in the back half of the shield through the hospital cross of the Memminger Unterhospital.
