Mallets
A mallet , formerly Schlegel is a device or tool for whipping.
Word origin
Mallet and Schlegel derived from althochdeutsch slegil , tool for whipping 'over medium high German slegel from. The term has a related meaning to flail , but also to club . The 1996 reform of German spelling stipulated the spelling on mallets because the root of the word is punch (as opposed to the chicken leg).
Tools
Mallet specifically stands for several hand tools . So for the club-shaped wooden hammer in the sculpture is common for carving and also as Knüpfel (clapper) is called. A percussion hammer (with a square cross-section and wooden handle) used in mining, such as the Fäustel ( fist hammer), also bears this name (see also mallets and irons ). According to the mining terminology includes hammer and chisel to gezähe of the miner.
From other trades, this name has been handed down for special hammers, such as for flail -like devices for breaking the flax . A splitting ax , i.e. an ax with a heavy, wide - hammer-shaped - head, is called a flail hoe or a mösel .

- In agricultural circles, the flail mulcher is referred to as "Schlegel" . This is an agricultural machine for attachment to tractors (front or rear attachment possible), which is used for cutting up herbaceous growth - mostly fallow land .
