Ensemble of Babenhausen Castle and Market

Fugger Castle Babenhausen 02.jpg

The ensemble includes the entire castle area with the castle garden within the walling and the associated commercial and administrative buildings; the market square and the Stadtgasse on the slope of the Schlossberg are also part of the ensemble.

The stately and diverse castle complex occupies the edge of a plateau and, with its mighty western front, dominates the market that has unfolded at its feet in the valley of the Günz. The exact axis relationship of the regularly laid out city street to the representative front of the high castle with three gable facades and the tower of the parish church gives the relationship between castle and market a hierarchical character. The historical roots of today's facility go back to the Middle Ages. A castle - in the same place as the palace - was first mentioned in 1237; the place itself had city rights in 1315 - a city wall can be proven. The town flourished when the rule passed into the possession of the Lords of Rechberg, documented in the old castle wing, the rake mining. In the 15th century the town charter was lost.

In 1538 Anton Fugger acquired the entire Babenhausen estate and redesigned the castle and public buildings. Church and palace complex were closely linked, the tower of the church included as the corner tower of the palace. In addition to the New Palace, extensive business facilities, a brewery, Zehentstadel, law firm and others were built. The market square in front of the castle along the retaining wall was occupied by important public buildings: at the transition from the Stadtgasse to the market square, the former administrative seats of princely and "urban" rule, the former Fugger court building (essentially 18th century, largely renewed in 1990) and the so-called old town hall (1948–50 rebuilt after fire), the rectory at the end of the market square in the north (demolished in 1959, new building put back). The townscape is determined by stately eaves and gabled houses, especially from the 17th and 18th centuries. Century with changes in the 19th century.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
