St. Maria in Babenhausen

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Maria in Babenhausen in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria is a listed building.

history

In the place of the Church of St. Maria there was a chapel , which was probably built at the same time as the cemetery was built in 1542. This building was replaced by the current church in 1722. The architect of the new building was probably Michael Stiller . The ridge turret with pointed helmet was renewed in the middle of the 19th century.

Building description

The church consists of a single nave nave . In this there is a needle cap barrel . There is a double gallery inside on the west side of the church . The space below is partially walled up as a narrow vestibule. At the nave, the drawn closed on three sides includes choir at. The church is structured with pilasters both inside and out . There are arched windows in the nave.

Furnishing

The high altar with a copy of the miraculous image of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome was created in 1695. Figures of Saints Benedict and Magnus are located next to the sinuous free columns. Both side altars date from around 1720/1730. The carved antependium from 1750/1760 shows Saint Anne with Mary in the middle of the left side altar. In the right antependium there is a relief depicting Saint Leonhard, who is also shown in the altarpiece from 1720/1730 in the right side altar . The altarpiece on the left side altar from the same period shows Mary with her parents. The crucifix in the choir arch dates from around 1722.

The frescoes in the church were uncovered in 1911 and partially repainted by Alois and Matthäus Haugg. The fall of man and the birth of Christ are depicted in the choir . The gussets of the nave show angels with poor souls. A representation of the dance of death memento mori , for which copper engravings from the chapel of the dead of Abraham a Santa Clara served as a template, is on the west gallery.

In the vestibule there are several grave monuments. A bronze coat of arms relief is attached for Fugger's chief magistrate Johann Martin Herz († 1711). A similar plate is reminiscent of Sixt Weselin († 1568).
