The Marionetz are a German new wave / punk band from Munich , founded in 1978 (under the name “The Marionettes”) , which, after renaming and switching to German texts, became the prototypes and founders of German fun punk , a sub -Scene of punk culture , which emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s as an internal alternative to Hardcore Punk , which was then heavily influenced by political correctness and negative visions of the end of the world .

history

Prehistory (The Marionettes)

The Marionettes at a photo shoot in 1978: Thommy Davis, Sigi Pop, Biffi, Günther B

In August 1977 Sigi Pop joined the doom metal band Crashin Heave ("Krachende Kotze") on bass, where he met his future and permanent colleague Günter B. on guitar, then 17. In 1978 they met the German-American Singer Tommy Davis and his drummer Biffi from the wave combo TV Phone know. In the summer of the same year they began to play as The Marionettes. On board was guitarist Achim, who later worked with the Alan Parsons Project and Pink Floyd . Achim, however, soon found it too wild, too loud, too unmusical and he quickly disembarked again.

The band was oriented towards hip bands such as the Stooges , Wire , Roxy Music , The Clash and Sex Pistols . But especially to the "uncompromising" Ultravox at the time .

They quickly rose to become Munich's cult band and insider tip. The Münchner Blätter wrote euphorically, and the filmmaker Klaus Lemke hired them for two of his films “A comical saint” and “The very last”.

Lothar Meid and John Weinzierl from Amon Düül 2 took care of them and organized a. a. Support gigs for Japan and Police .

The Marionettes played wild, uncompromising concerts, almost every time in front of completely different audiences. Above all Tommy Davis, who provoked the audience, no matter where, to the blood. At that time there was neither a large punk scene nor suitable performance opportunities in Munich in 1978/79. Great songs were created, many of which were used on the later Marionetz LPs / singles.

Lothar Meid produced a complete The Marionettes LP with sound engineer Tom Winter ( Boomtown Rats, among others ) in Munich's Arco Studio, but it was never released. In the band it became increasingly clear that they were moving apart musically, Tommy Davis wanted to move away from punk and more towards dark avant-garde like Roxy Music or Talking Heads . Sigi Pop, however, wanted to play power and fun punk like Damned or Ramones . When drummer Biffi had to join the armed forces and the last two concerts with Amon Düül 2 drummer Danny Fichelscher , the band traditionally broke up in order to remain credible for everyone.

It was during this era that Sigi Pop wrote the song Ich bin ein T-Shirt , which later sold 250,000 times. Tommy Davis then worked as an actor, continued with Lothar Meid on bass, guitarist Nick Woodland , under the name Marionettes for a few years and later moved to California.

1979

Marionetz 1981 in the studio: Early Ledder, Sigi Pop, Günther B

After the split of The Marionettes in 1979 Sigi Pop (bass / voc.) And Günther B. (guitar) tried each other in different formations, like with the musicians from Pack. Founded The Dominos u. a. with an early ex-guitarist from The Damned and Franz Trojan on drums, which broke up after a short time.

Early Ledder / Fred Hubb (Christian Trautner) joined them later. A Bavarian Keith Moon who played drums in a completely unorthodox way, since he was actually a keyboard player. The Marionetz was then spontaneously founded from this 3-person formation.

At first with English texts, which came to an abrupt end when Sigi Pop presented them to an English DJ from the Damage Club for correction and, after studying for a long time, he asked in amazement which language it would be? Out of sheer defiance he then wrote the songs of the later “Jetzt Knallts” LP with purely German lyrics. That was the birth of the German radio station.

1980-1985

Marionetz 1984: from left Django Schuster, Günther B, Sigi Pop, Michi Sailer

In 1980, with sound engineer Stefan Zauner , Amon Düül 2 later Münchner Freiheit , the 1st official single "Wir sind die Marionetz" was released and sold 1000 pieces by hand. "Gas Gas Gas" and later "Ich bin ein T-Shirt" were each number 1 in the Spex reader and editorial charts. 1981 Again with sound engineer Stefan Zauner, 1st LP "Jetzt knallts", which became a cult disc and is still being reissued to this day. 1982 followed the recordings for the cult sampler "Soundtracks zum Untergang II" with "Action" and the now famous "Ich bin ein T-Shirt", both of which actually belonged to the outtakes of the 1st LP. The soundtrack song "So young, so proud and unemployed" was still recorded, but only released 12 years later. The soccer song “Heya Heya TSV” is sung in the stadiums to this day.

On the following tour through Northern Germany, drummer Early Ledder / Fred Hub (Christian Trautner) got out completely surprisingly. Michi Sailer came from rabies as the new bass player and Django Schuster joined the drummer from the nudist beach wankers . Sigi Pop only sang and operated a children's organ. With the new line-up, it went on in the fastest power pop punk. But her label No Fun had no understanding for this and canceled the second LP “Marionetz im Weltraum” - which was never recorded. Since the band was now without a record deal, they played all the more live. The zeitgeist turned more and more to pop and punk in general went down the drain. The Marionetz faced dissolution.

At one of the last concerts in the Rigan Club, the then stars of the Neue Deutsche Welle , Nena and Markus , who were in Munich for filming, came on stage as well as Franz Trojan , who drummed the Marionetz track "Leck mich am Arsch", a cover version of the Spider Murphy hit "Where are you". The producer Harald Steinhauer listened in and immediately offered demo recordings. And that turned into a major record deal with Warner Bros. Unfortunately, the producer decided on the 20 demo tracks exclusively for the potentially pop-sounding, commercially promising, slower songs and the rest of the excellent material sadly gathered dust. In 1984 the second LP "Vierzehn" appeared on Warner Brothers with two single releases. The label went to great lengths and provided the band with TV appearances and interviews in pop magazines. Despite the excellent pop production of the album, the Marionetz never felt part of the new German wave . Almost simultaneously, Sigi Pop and Michi Sailer got the leading roles in the 13-part TV music series BLAM! . Since the commercial success hoped for by Warner Bros. did not materialize, and after Michi Sailer left the band, a further collaboration with the label was abandoned.

Rainer Germann (Gussie) from Broken Colors came to replace Michi Sailer . In 1985 the band separated in friendship. Sigi Pop got out, became Straight Edge , got involved in vegetarianism , animal welfare and the APPD and the rest continued under the name The Mask.

1990-2007

Marionetz 1991: Marion Ätz, Sigi Pop, Early Ledder

After Sigi Pop's long stay in India, the first revival came about in 1990, together with the old drummer Early Ledder and the new bass player Marion Ätz (Andrea Carmine) later Vocaholics. Sigi Pop played the guitar this time. The very rocking, but perfectly produced third LP "The greatest failures" was recorded and was supposed to appear on the Toten Hosen label by Trini Trimpop . But Sigi Pop preferred to meditate and travel and disbanded the band.

From 1993 Sigi Pop then played live solo as an acoustic punk rock entertainer and released the "Herman Monster" CD / LP + 2 singles. 1995 Friend & guitarist Günther B. dies of a stroke at the age of 34, much too early. Most recently at Lustfinger . In 1999, the crème de la creme of the German punk rock scene did the honors and covered 28 Marionetz songs on a Marionetz tribute CD & LP. With u. a. Rasta Knast , the cashier , Rod Gonzalez ( The doctors ) Public Toys , Wohlstandskinder , ACK , Eisenpimmel , Lustfinger and many Munich bands. Thanks to their strong influence on the German punk scene, the Marionetz, with their original, witty lyrics and extraordinary compositions, originally inspired by Buzzcocks , Clash and Ramones , have always received great respect from bands and musicians.

Another reunion in 2006/07 with alto drummer Django (Jürgen Schuster) and guitarist Chris Void (Melody Lee, Pearls For Pigs, The Void Heros), who was previously the sound engineer & lighting man of Marionetz. Mainly, however, the re-establishment was for the big "Mia san against" film premiere festival. Shortly afterwards this formation also broke up.

Marionetz 2013 live: Sigi Pop, Manny Bachinger, Chrissi Bischoff

In 2012, Sigi Pop and guitarist Manny B. (diarrhea, hectic, Ivy League and much more) meet at a nostalgia The Marionettes session and decide to do old school punk rock together again in the long term. The trio was completed by Chrissi Bischoff (Stimillion, The New Recruits) alias DJ Dragstar on drums. The first live concerts took place in 2013. Marionetz plays a. a. with Spizz Energi and Barb Wire Dolls .
