Stefan Zauner (born June 30, 1952 in Göttingen ) is a German musician , composer and music producer . He became known as the singer of the band Münchener Freiheit .

Life

He was born in 1952 as the son of the film director and later science fiction writer Georg Zauner . After graduating from school, Zauner moved to graphic schools in Munich and Basel and then worked as a freelance graphic artist. From 1991 to 2009 he lived in Ibiza . Since then he has settled in Töging am Inn in Bavaria . Zauner married for the second time in 2012; his first wife died of pneumonia in 2002 .

Musical career

He gained his first musical experience with the composer and music producer Harold Faltermeyer , with whom he played in a beat band in Munich.

Zauner was a member of the legendary Krautrock formation Amon Düül 2 in the 1970s . In the 1970s, the first solo albums were also created, including Prism & Views , which is currently not available on CD , which the keyboardist of the progressive rock band Dream Theater , Jordan Rudess , was named one of the ten best progressive albums in a feature on the musicians' website Musicradar in May 2012. Rock albums of all time reckoned.

Münchener Freiheit

In 1980 Stefan Zauner founded the band Münchener Freiheit with Aron Strobel and not only took on the role of singer, but also composed and produced most of the pieces together with Strobel. At the latest since the album Herzschlag einer Stadt , which was released in 1984, and regular appearances on the ZDF hit parade , the group has been one of the best-known pop bands in Germany. With singles like Ohne dich (I'm not going to sleep tonight) , but also their albums, the group kept making it into the charts. In 1993, Zauner achieved 18th place for Germany with Münchener Freiheit at the Eurovision Song Contest . By 2010 he released 20 studio albums with the formation, including three English-language albums. In November 2011 it was announced that he had left the band to devote himself to his own projects in the future.

Deuces Wild

In 1991 Zauner recorded the album Living in the Sun together with Aron Strobel under the name Deuces Wild . The first single This Boy , a cover version of the Beatles title of the same name , reached number 80 in the German charts. So that the connection to the Münchener Freiheit was not immediately clear, Stefan Zauner translated his name literally into English and called himself Steven Fencer, while Aron Strobel reflected his name and cleverly separated him. This is where his pseudonym, Nora Le Borts , came about .

Solo career

After he had already recorded two solo albums in the 1970s, he released a solo album again in 1995 - this time under the name SOL. On Some Other Language , among others, worked Queen guitarist Brian May and the band The Hooters (as a singer) with. Here, too, Armand Volker played a key role. Three titles were later recorded with German texts by the Münchener Freiheit. After leaving Münchener Freiheit, the albums Zeitfühl (2012), FABELhaft (2014), Mensch, ärgere Dich nicht (2016) and the compilation So Weit , so gut (2017) followed. His wife Petra Manuela is a singer on all albums. The album Personal was released in May 2019 .
