The cashier is a German punk - band from Bochum - Wattenscheid .
history
The band was founded in 1985 with the line-up of Wolfgang "Wölfi" Wendland , Mitch Maestro and Volker Kampfgarten (actually Volker Wendland). According to legend, the name goes back to the fact that the members sat at the box office of a self-organized concert and spontaneously formed a band. After changing guitars from time to time, including the later Ruhrpott AG rapper Pahel Brunis and Achim “Wah Wah” Weigel from Carnival of Souls , Nikolaj Sonnenscheiße (actually Nikolaj Hagemeister) finally joined the band.
After a first single and the LP Gentle Structures , on which the band presented a mixture of punk and cabaret with musical skills, the cashiers caused more and more attention in the course of the 1990s with their polarizing lyrics and performances. In 1993, the Düsseldorf punk label Teenage Rebel Records released the album Der heilige Geist attack an , which was the style for all other records and shows the typical style elements of the band. The often exaggerated and explicit texts meant that applications for indexing this album and the subsequent LP Habe Brille were received by the Federal Testing Office for writings harmful to minors. However, accusations such as “sexism”, “glorification of violence” or “ethical disorientation” were always refuted, as the satirical character of the music could be made clear to the decision-making body. These decisions contributed significantly to the fact that the band was perceived more and more often in an "art" context.
In 1997 the cashiers were able to surprise their critics with the CD Taubenvergiften , which only contained cover versions of songs by the cabaret artist Georg Kreisler . Two years later the album Music for Both Ears followed and in 2003 the record Men, Bombs, Satellites . In 2005 the tribute album Kunst! published, on which cashier songs by artists such as the Donots , Hennes Bender , Mambo Kurt , Gunter Gabriel , the local heroes , Emscherkurve 77 , Brigade S. as well as Bela B. and Rod von Die Ärzte (as "2 fucking dogs") re-recorded were. In 2010, Physik, the first new album in seven years, was released.
style
The musical style of the cashiers is extremely diverse and includes classic punk-rock excursions in a wide variety of genres such as ska , country , jazz , chanson , techno or folk music . Many songs also attract attention with their provocative lyrics. Recurring topics are alcohol consumption ( schnapps and beer , being drunk ), violence ( you looked , dead, dead, dead ) and sexuality ( up your skirt , in your stick ). In addition, the polarizing character of the band is underlined by the controversial stage shows. An example of this is an appearance by the band on the television program Circus HalliGalli , in which Wendland, to the astonishment of studio guest Lena Meyer-Landrut, performed the song The worst is when the beer is gone. Tilman Abegg of the Ruhr Nachrichten counts this and God has an IQ of 5 billion as one of the “more socially acceptable among their titles”. He describes her music as “neither flat nor glorifying violence”, it resembles “someone who yells in your face happily and drunk and has not brushed your teeth”. According to Sebastian Kessler from Metal Hammer, the concerts are "characterized by sympathetic anti-social hymns ('Cauliflower on the Pillemann', 'Sex with the social worker'), alcohol and nudity". At the same time, the cashiers also regularly publish songs of a philosophical character and texts that satirically deal with current events.
Others
Wolfgang Wendland was involved in the Anarchist Pogo Party of Germany (APPD) and, after its split, in the Pogo Party (POP). As APPD candidate for chancellor, he also took part in the controversial election commercial for the 2005 federal election . In addition, the cashiers also controlled a special version of the song “Anarchy & Alcohol” for the 1998 APPD campaign sampler Soon the APPD rules! at.
Several members of the band have studied. Wolfgang Wendland studied film and theater, philosophy, education and politics, Volker Wendland studied popular music with a focus on jazz. Nikolaj Hagemeister is a graduate engineer for spatial planning and teaches Tai Chi on the side . Volker Wendland is also active musically with the gypsy jazz bands Stringtett and Douce Ambiance .
From January 2015, the band with the Punk stood operetta chief evening breeze and the cashier after the factory chief Abendwind of Johann Nestroy on spectacle Dortmund live on stage.
On November 20, 2015, a petition was started on openPetition by the Ruhrbarone blog to name the cashiers as German representatives for the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest .
The music for the radio play Der Putsch (WDR, 2016) comes from The Cashiers.
Singer Wolfgang Wendland plays many of the band's concerts with a naked torso, some songs also completely naked. At some concerts the other musicians also play partially naked.
