history

Beginnings / first albums

The Donots were formed in 1993 by Ingo and Guido Knollmann, responsible for vocals and guitar, bassist Jan-Dirk Poggemann, guitarist Jens Grimstein and drummer Jens Trippner. The name Donots stands for the band's self- deprecating philosophy of “nothing to do” ( don'ts = do nothing ).

On April 16, 1994 the Donots celebrated their stage debut in the Scheune , a youth culture center in Ibbenbüren. The band names this day as their official band birthday. That same year they released their first demo recording, We Do Not Care So Why Should You? , which appeared in an edition of 30 pieces. Her second demo tape Melodies and Harmonies was published in an edition of 50 copies.

1995 Eike Herwig took over the position on drums. The following year the first album Pedigree Punk was released, which was recorded in Münster and Cologne . After the release, Alexander Siedenbiedel replaced the guitarist Jens Grimstein. This was followed by joint concerts with blink-182 , Propagandhi , No Fun At All , Terrorgruppe and No Use for a Name .

In the spring of 1998, the five Ibbenbüren released their second album Tonight's Karaoke Contest Winners . This was followed by the first tour with Samiam and Errortype: 11 and an appearance at the Bizarre Festival on the Visions stage. This gig was part of a competition they won. Shortly thereafter, they signed a record deal with Gun Records , a sub-label of Supersonic Records.

Time at GUN Records

In 1999, the major label "Supersonic Records" ( Sony BMG ) released the third album Better Days Not Included , for which the Donots released their first single Outshine the World and was heard for the first time on radio and television. The album was recorded in Spain in spring 1999 with producer Uwe Hoffmann . The band also made video recordings there, which can be seen in the music video You're So Yesterday from the album Wake the Dog . The first headlining tour Ladies First - James Last with the Berlin rock band Beatsteaks followed.

The Donots made their breakthrough in 2001 with the album Pocketrock , especially with the single Whatever Happened to the 80’s . Furthermore, the songs Superhero , Today and Room with a view were released as a single. The first headlining tour with the American band Midtown led through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. A year later Pocketrock was released across Europe through the Burning Heart Records label . The album was the first collaboration with producer Fabio Trentini .

After the release of the pre- single Saccharine Smile on May 21, 2002, the fifth album, Amplify the Good Times, was released on June 17, 2002. This album also includes the later released single Big Mouth . The cover version of the Twisted Sister song We're Not Gonna Take It was released on September 30, 2002 as an EP with other metal covers. At the end of 2002, the Donots embarked on a European tour with the Swedish band Millencolin and on the Amplify the Good tour through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and France with the Swiss band Favez .

In 2003, the album Amplify the Good Times reached 51st place in the Japanese charts. The band went on tour there for the first time this year. Due to the success, the album Pocketrock and the EP We're Not Gonna Take It were released in Japan. A tour started in Germany with the British band 3 Colors Red. The protest song against the Iraq war , which was available for free download, was recorded together with the band Anti-Flag .

Got the Noise , the sixth studio album, was released on June 21, 2004 and reached number 17 in the German charts, number 39 in the Austrian charts and number 42 in the Japanese charts. The songs We Got the Noise and Good-Bye Routine were released as singles from the album . In August 2004, the Donots contributed the song Time's Up to the sampler Rock Against Bush Vol. 2 , which was released on Fat Wreck Chords .

For the 10th anniversary of the band, the DVD Ten Years of Noise was released on January 31, 2005 , which includes a studio documentary on "Amplify the Good Times" and three live songs as well as the music videos with making-ofs of the band that had been produced up to that point.

On November 14, 2006, the best-of album The Story So Far - Ibbtown Chronicles was released , which contains all the singles, B-sides and two new songs Duck and Cover and Play Dead . This release sealed her resignation from the major label Gun Records , from which the band separated for personal reasons. “Over time we fought more and more with each other instead of looking for solutions together. We just didn't understand each other anymore. The last record was actually only damage control. Even when it comes to promotional activities, we were absolutely no longer on the same wavelength. Especially with video clips, the selection of singles and the entire external image of the band, ”said Guido Knollmann.

Foundation of his own record company

In 2007 they played individual concerts and appeared at several festivals, including the 25th Rheinkultur . At the end of 2007 the Donots recorded the songs on the upcoming album together with Kurt Ebelhäuser, guitarist of the band Blackmail , and Vincent Sorg.

On March 28, 2008, the album Coma Chameleon was released by the band's own record company Solitary Man Records . This album also includes the later released singles Break My Stride , Stop the Clocks and The Right Kind of Wrong . In the same year, the single Stop the Clocks was nominated for the 1Live Krone listener award as best single . In 2008, after a four-year tour break, the Donots went on tour with the Finnish band Disco Ensemble in spring and with the German band Fire in the Attic and the US band American Steel in autumn .

On September 22nd, 2009, the mini-album To Hell with Love was released on the English market. After their tour with Die Toten Hosen in June 2009, the band worked again on new songs for their album, which was finally released in 2010. On December 18, 2009, the first live DVD, To Hell with Live , was released, which not only includes a concert recording, but also the music videos produced from the Coma Chameleon album .

On September 21, 2010 a limited edition of the album The Long Way Home , which contains songs from the album Coma Chameleon as bonus songs , was released in England by Released by the music label Lockjaw Records. On July 27, 2010 the band announced the dates of the Short Way Home Tour , which included three concerts in their adopted home of Münster . Over 3000 spectators attended the tour finale in the Halle Münsterland. This record was beaten a year later at the same place with over 4000 spectators.

Time at Universal Music Group

On April 16, 2014, on the occasion of their 20th anniversary as a band, the Donots published a song completely in German for the first time ( The new thing stays with the old ) and offered it for free download. The album Karacho was announced towards the end of 2014 . It is the band's first album with exclusively German lyrics. In the course of this, the Karacho tour was announced. The latter later had to be moved to autumn 2015 because drummer Herwig injured his heel and was therefore not allowed to play. In December the Donots played five more concerts before they had their home game in Münster.

In 2014 the band also managed to fill the entire hall at the Grand Münster Slam . So it was the biggest headlining concert in the band's history. As support came Tim Vantol , The Subways and CJ Ramone on. From that evening on, the Donots played with Ich mach nicht mit more and Hansaring 2:10 a.m. also two songs from their announced album.

Change to the German language

On January 9, 2015, the video for the song I don't participate anymore , about a month later the video for Then without me was released . The album Karacho was released on February 20, 2015 and received very good reviews on average. For example, the EMP record box wrote:

"With brain and heart you manage to give the great music a depth that you can only ask yourself one question: Why on earth did the Donots not present German lyrics?"

- Peter : The EMP record box for February 20, 2015 (published on February 18, 2015 on emp.de)

Karacho entered the German album charts at number 5, making it the band's highest chart position to date. The vinyl version entered the vinyl charts in Germany at number 14 . In March the Donots were guests at Circus HalliGalli . During the live performance, the injured drummer Herwig was represented by the drummers from the bands Sportfreunde Stiller , Die Toten Hosen and Die Ärzte .

On April 16, 2015, on the occasion of the band's birthday, the video for Problem no problem was released . Four days later the band announced a show in Tokyo as well as an English version of the album Karacho called Carajo , which was released in Japan on May 27, 2015. In summer 2015 the band played at various festivals; Among other things, the band opened the 30th Rock am Ring Festival .

On August 29, 2015, the Donots took part in the Bundesvision Song Contest 2015 and took second place with their song Dann ohne Mich with 117 points. They had to admit defeat to Mark Forster , who reached 170 points.

On October 11, 2015 they played as part of the WIR concert . Voices for refugees in Munich on the Königsplatz .

The video for Hansaring 2:10 a.m. appeared on October 14, 2015.

On December 10, 2016, the Donots gave their thousandth concert in the band's history. The concert took place in the sold-out Halle Münsterland and, almost a year later, was sold on DVD together with the album Lauter als Bomben .

To support the protests against the New Year's reception of the right-wing populist party AfD , the Donots interrupted their live break on February 10, 2017 and played in front of around 8,000 demonstrators in Münster.

In May 2017 the band released the single No One Comes Out Of Here Alive , both on a split vinyl with Adam Angst , and as the first single from the album Lauter als Bomben , which was released on January 12, 2018. Additional music videos were produced for the songs Rauschen (on every frequency) , Whatever Forever , One Last Last Round , Headwindsurfing , All the Time in the World and Piano Mortale .

On the evening before Lauter als Bomben was released , the band called for a spontaneous show on the radio station 1 Live on the former underground site. More than 500 people responded to this call. With louder than bombs , the Donots achieved their highest chart position to date. The album entered the German charts at number four and number 21 in the Austrian charts. This is also their third top ten position in a row in the German album charts. The album was followed by an extensive tour in March 2018 and from November 2018 to January 2019 through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In Cologne, the Donots and Kraftklub faked a power failure at their concerts taking place at the same time in order to swap the stage for a song. This was only possible due to the location of the adjacent venues. Both bands were rewarded for this with the prize for pop culture in the category “Most Exciting Idea / Campaign”.

On the occasion of their 25th band anniversary, the Donots played a sold out concert in the barn on April 16, 2019 , where they also played their very first concert. The birthday was also celebrated with the Birthday Slams . These concerts took place in Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Berlin and Wiesbaden.

On July 12, 2019, the band released their second best-of album Silverhochzeit, which entered the German album charts at number six. The name is an allusion to both the English and German songs the band produced, as well as the silver wedding anniversary itself.

The Grand Summer Slam was the Donots' own, again sold-out festival that took place on September 15, 2019. It was the end of their "Birthday Summers". The festival visitors only found out on site which bands made up the line-up: Sounds and Colors , Montreal , Thees Uhlmann and the Sondaschule .

During 2019, the Donots released two more songs. On the one hand, this was failure, done , which was produced for the 3sat broadcast Wahnsinnswerke on the subject of Woyzeck . The band also released Willkommen zuhaus as a benefit single, with all proceeds going to Jamel rocks the Forester , where the song was performed for the first time.
