No Use for a Name ( NUFAN ) was a punk rock band formed in Sunnyvale , California in 1987 . While the songs of the band were still very hardcore- heavy in the early years , the works developed clearly in the direction of melodycore and pop punk in the course of the 1990s . NUFAN has released eight studio albums, one live album and two EPs during its existence . After the surprising death of longtime front man and main songwriter of the band Tony Sly on July 31, 2012, the remaining band members announced the end of No Use for a Name.

history

No Use for a Name was founded in 1987. A year later, the band released their first EP , which bore the band's name. In 1989 the EP Let 'em Out! . Tony Sly joined them and shortly afterwards three founding members left the band: Chris Dodge, Doug Judd and John Meyer.

In 1991 he was the first album with new cast Incognito , which over the label was published New Red Archives. Incognito was recorded in Hollywood in September 1990 and produced by Brett Gurewitz . In addition to eleven own songs, the album also contains a cover version of the song Truth Hits Everybody by The Police . After the return of guitarist Chris Dodge, the second album Don't Miss the Train followed in 1992 .

In 1993 the band signed a recording deal with Fat Wreck Chords , the label of NOFX frontman Fat Mike , on which the band released the eight-song album The Daily Grind in 1993 . In 1995, her most successful album to date, ¡Leche con Carne! ( dt: milk with meat ). ¡Leche con Carne! includes 12 songs, including eleven by Tony Sly and a cover version of Bob Marley's Redemption Song . The band then accompanied The Offspring as support for some of their shows during the Smash Tour, after which guitarist Ed Gregor and bassist Steve Papoutsis left the band and were replaced by Chris Shiflett and Matt Riddle (ex- Face to Face ). The music video produced for the song Soulmate was the first in the band's history and also the first by a Fat Wreck Chords band to be broadcast on MTV .

The fourth studio album, Making Friends , was released in 1997. The album starts with the film quote “ What's your name? Fuck you! That's my name. ”, A dialogue between Alec Baldwin and Ed Harris from the US drama Glengarry Glen Ross . This dialogue subsequently became an integral part of the band's live performances, with one of the band members asking the question, which the audience answered. The band's merchandising products with the quote were also designed and sold. The album, again comprising twelve tracks, contains another film quote at the beginning of the song On the Outside by David Thewlis from the film Nackt . The tradition of placing cover versions on the albums was also retained: on the one hand, a version of the Irish famine- themed song Fields of Athenry and, on the other hand, a hidden track version of the Kiss song Beth.

More betterness! , the fifth studio album, followed in 1999 and consisted of 14 songs, including Fairytale of New York , a cover version of the British folk punk band The Pogues in which Cinder Block from the band Tilt acts as a guest singer. With a running time of over 44 minutes, More Betterness was! at this point the longest work by the band. Shortly before the start of the accompanying tour, Chris Shiflett surprisingly left the band because he got the chance to replace Franz Stahl as guitarist in the much more successful Foo Fighters . Dave Nassie (Ex- Suicidal Tendencies ) joined the band for Shiflett . In 2001 the band's only live album was released. Live in a Dive was recorded a year earlier at two concerts in San Francisco and Los Angeles and contains 20 songs.

Hard Rock Bottom , the sixth studio album from 2002, contains the second track International You Day , which was to become the anthem of the deceased in 2012 after the death of Tony Sly. A music video was released for the song Dumb Reminders , in which the band runs away from angry fans who obviously do not agree with the development of NUFAN. The usual cover, this time supported vocally by Dance Hall Crashers singer Karina Deniké, is This Is a Rebel Song , which originally comes from the Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor .

In June 2005, Keep Them Confused , the seventh studio album, was released for the first time without a cover version with significantly more pop elements. A music video was also released for the song For Fiona , dedicated to Tony Sly's daughter Fiona .

After the release of the best-of album All the Best Songs in 2007, which contained two previously unreleased songs, the eighth and final studio album, The Feel Good Record of the Year , followed in 2008 . Produced by Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore, the album, written entirely by Sly, is musically much more complex than the works of the early years. In addition to organs , clarinets and piano are also used, for example . A music video was produced for the first song on the Biggest Lie album . During the promotion of The Feel Good Record of the Year in 2009 left Dave nassie the band and joined Bleeding Through on. During the tours that followed the album, Nassie was replaced by Chris Rest of Lagwagon .

On August 1, 2012, Fat Wreck Chords announced the death of Tony Sly the day before, which was followed a few days later by the statement that he had "died peacefully in his sleep".

After a show by the rest of the band with guest musicians in honor of Sly on September 8, 2012 in Quebec City, Canada, bassist Matt Riddle announced that this would be the last show and the band would split up.

No use and friends

In June 2015, on the occasion of the label's 25th birthday, Fat Wreck Chords announced that former NUFAN members Matt Riddle, Rory Koff and Dave Nassie would go on the label's anniversary tour together with various guest singers under the name No Use And Friends . Even after the tour ended, the concept remained and No Use And Friends now appear irregularly, mainly at festivals. In 2016 No Use And Friends were also on the road in Europe and performed at Groezrock in Meerhout, Belgium .
