Brett Gurewitz aka Mr. Brett (born May 12, 1962 in Los Angeles ) is the guitarist and songwriter of the American band Bad Religion . He is the founder and owner of the independent label Epitaph Records .

Career

In 1979, Gurewitz and his high school classmates Greg Graffin , Jay Bentley and Jay Ziskrout founded the band Bad Religion in Los Angeles , in which he is guitarist and songwriter and which is still an institution in punk rock today. In 1994 he left the band due to internal disputes in order to devote himself completely to his label. Problems with drugs are also said to have played a role. He founded a new band called Daredevils (with Josh Freese from the Vandals and the later successful director Gore Verbinski , among others ), but they did not release more than the single Hate You (1996). Gurewitz worked for the punk rock band NOFX as a producer for their first three studio albums Liberal Animation , S&M Airlines and Ribbed from 1988 to 1991.

After he co-wrote a song for the Bad Religion album The New America in 2000 ( Believe It ), Gurewitz finally returned to his old band in 2001, with which he is now involved in the songwriting again, but because of his work cannot accompany his label on tour regularly. Since Brian Baker remained in the Bad Religion lineup as his replacement at the time, the guitar parts could still be performed live without any problems. In 2002 the "Reunion" album The Process of Belief was released, now with three guitarists in the studio, and in 2004 the highly political album The Empire Strikes First .

In 2003 Gurewitz founded the band Error together with the brothers Atticus and Leopold Ross as well as Greg Puciato , but they mainly make electronic music.
