chronology
The Empire Strikes First (2004) New Maps of Hell The Dissent of Man (2010)

New Maps of Hell is the fourteenth studio album from Bad Religion . It was released in 2007, three years after the previous album The Empire Strikes First and 25 years after the first Bad Religion album How Could Hell Be Any Worse? , which it alludes to through its title and the design of the album cover. New Maps of Hell is the third album since the band returned to Epitaph Records as well as the third album with the current line-up. Musically, the album continued the path taken since The Process of Belief (2002) and relied on aggressive but melodic punk rock . In the USA , the album reached number 35 on the album charts with 21,000 units sold in the first week and gave the band their best chart position ever.

History of origin

As early as 2005, the band discussed the successor to The Empire Strikes First and announced a possible release in 2006. However, for various reasons the project was pushed back. One of these reasons was the release of singer Greg Graffin's second solo album , (Cold as the Clay) in July 2006. In September 2006, drummer Brooks Wackerman announced on Bad Religion's Myspace page that the band had started demo recordings for the new album have. In January 2007, the recording with producer Joe Barresi began, which was completed in April 2007. The tracklist published at the time was changed again when the song New Chapter was deleted, although it was already mixed. For a short time the release of a double album was considered, but this idea was rejected by bassist Jay Bentley.
