The Dissent of Man is the 15th studio album by the American punk band Bad Religion . It was released on September 28, 2010 on Epitaph Records on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the band .

backgrounds

When writing the song for the previous album New Maps of Hell , the band pursued the aim of writing a conservative and fast melodic hardcore album, while the basic idea behind The Dissent of Man was that every band member would find themselves musically and lyrically. Also for personal reasons the lyrics are more personal than on the previous albums, Greg Graffin published his book Anarchy Evolution at the same time as the album and Brett Gurewitz became a father again. For example, Pride and the Pallor is about family conflicts and the conflict between men and women and Ad Hominem thematizes the inability of people to fight a dispute with words. In Wrong Way Kids is about the feeling of young punks, Avalon is supposed to be the wise advice of a punk father to his son.

The album title is based on Charles Darwin's book " The Descent of Man and Sexual Selection ", whose English title is "The Descent of Man", whereby descent sounds similar to dissent when spoken . The band wanted to express how they see their own development and that of the punk scene over the past 30 years, and graduate evolutionary biologist Greg Graffin also liked the play on the title of a book from his field.

Emergence

Like the previous albums , The Dissent of Man was co-produced by Joe Barresi , and the recordings took place in his own studio, Joe's House of Compression . Main songwriters Brett Gurewitz and Greg Graffin had pre-produced demos of the songs with the help of ProTools , which were reworked and partially rearranged in the studio with Barresi's participation. Barresi then digitized parts of the demos so that drummer Brooks Wackerman could record his tracks with musical accompaniment and without a metronome. Next came the recording of the rhythm guitars, then the bass tracks. Then the lead guitars and vocals were overdubbed and finally the background vocals were overlaid.

publication

Brett Gurewitz, who in addition to his capacity as a band member is also head of the record label Epitaph Records, decided that the album will be kept under lock and key before the official release date on September 28, 2010, one reason being the fear of illegal music downloads . With The Devil in Stitches , a song from the album was released in advance as a single , with The Resist Stance another song was offered for listening on the mySpace site. The latter song also appeared in the spring of 2010 on the live album 30 Years Life , which the band released as a free download on the occasion of their 30th anniversary.

The song Won't Somebody was also released in 2008 as an acoustic version on the deluxe version of the previous album New Maps of Hell .

Reviews

Michael Rensen of Rock Hard magazine notes that after 15 albums in 30 years, no one would seriously expect a “stylistic revolution” from Bad Religion. He praises the first-class production of Joe Barresi, Greg Graffin's “velvety world-do-gooding voice” and Brook Wackerman's “world class drumming”. He notices a "slight classic rock influence" in songs like Cyanide and notes that the melodies are as usual catchy. However, he criticizes the sometimes "too warring choirs" in Wrong Way Kids, for example . Ulf Kubanke from the online magazine laut.de calls the album the "total creative resurrection". The melody is as catchy as usual, but never becomes as banal as it is on the previous albums. Kubanke sums up that the album is a "highly amusing manifesto of the Enlightenment". Jason Lymangrover from Allmusic sees the album in the tradition of the band's early phase, because even the most die-hard fans of the band could not have missed the lack of further development, although producer Barresi managed to set some accents. Thorsten Zahn from Metal Hammer thinks that with the album the band is returning to what “made them so great and so popular” and describes the lyrics as “socially critical, intelligent and eloquent”.
