biography

Training and first commercials

Gore Verbinski was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in 1964 as the son of a Polish nuclear physicist . His family later moved to San Diego, California . As a teenager, Verbinski began to be interested in film in addition to his passion for music, which was reflected in 8mm films he made with his friends. He began studying film studies at the University of California (UCLA) in Los Angeles , which he successfully completed in 1987 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts . This was followed by music videos for alternative bands such as L7 , Bad Religion , NOFX and Monster Magnet , and in the late 1990s for the DJ duo The Crystal Method , before Verbinski entered the advertising industry in 1993. The great success came two years later with the popular Budweiser campaign, for which he created the burping Budweiser frogs. Verbinski's commercials, in which he also shot Michael Jordan for the sporting goods manufacturer Nike , earned him four Clio Awards and the Silver Lion of Cannes . Musically, Verbinski worked as a guitarist for the punk bands Little Kings and Daredevils. The Daredevils, which he co-founded with Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion and Josh Freese of the Vandals , did nothing more than the single Hate You , which was released in 1996.

Film career

After his great success in the advertising industry, Verbinski wrote the screenplay for the short film The Ritual , which he filmed in 1996 with Brandon Williams . A year later, Verbinski was appointed director of the DreamWorks comedy Mouse Hunt , in which Nathan Lane and Lee Evans attempt to free their inherited ancient mansion from an all-powerful little mouse. The US $ 38 million production was a success at the US box office; the film grossed over $ 122 million in gross profits worldwide. This was followed by the gangster comedy The Mexican - A Hot Love with Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt in the leading roles, which was able to build on the success of Mouse Hunting , but brought the director divided reviews. Verbinski's international success paved the way in 2002 with the production Ring , the American remake of the Japanese horror film Ringu from 1998. The subtle story of a deadly videotape helped leading actress Naomi Watts to her breakthrough in Hollywood , and Verbinski received high praise from the critics for his artistic, Genre-untypical staging. The 45 million US dollar production advanced to global success and in the USA alone brought in almost three times its production costs. In the same year Verbinski jumped in for the last eighteen days of shooting The Time Machine after the director Simon Wells had exhausted his work and was only able to take part in the post-production again.

Gore Verbinski's success also remained true to his third feature film, the Pirates of the Caribbean , which is somewhere between romantic comedy and adventure film . In the $ 125 million Disney production, he revived the pirate film, believed to be dead, starring Johnny Depp in the role of the charismatic Captain Jack Sparrow , who contributed to the film's great success with his acting performance. The production about the cursed crew of a pirate ship, loosely based on the plot of the attraction Pirates of the Caribbean in the Disney theme parks, was nominated for five Oscars in 2004. Verbinski himself was nominated for a Saturn Award for best director by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films in 2004. Pirates of the Caribbean grossed over US $ 300 million in the US alone, cementing Verbinski's place as one of Hollywood's most successful directors. With just four feature films, the director managed to make a profit of more than one billion US dollars worldwide. Pirates of the Caribbean was followed by two financially successful sequels ( Pirates of the Caribbean - Pirates of the Caribbean 2 , 2006; Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End ), which grossed almost two billion US dollars worldwide. In order to realize it, Verbinski had to hand over the director's position for The Ring 2 to the Japanese Hideo Nakata . In 2005, the tragic comedy The Weather Man with Nicolas Cage , Michael Caine and Hope Davis in the leading roles was created, which, however, could not build on the great success of previous productions.

In April 2009, Verbinski announced that he would forego directing a planned fourth part of Pirates of the Caribbean ( Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides , 2011), for which his fellow director Rob Marshall was hired. Instead, he dealt with the filming of the video game BioShock, but he passed the role of director to Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, as he was legally bound by Universal Studios to the animated feature film Rango . This earned him an Oscar in 2012 in the category of best animated feature film .

Gore Verbinski avoids the public as much as possible. He is married and has two sons. The family lives in Los Angeles.
