Rob Marshall (born October 17, 1960 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is an American film director , film producer and choreographer .

Life

Rob Marshall grew up in Pittsburgh . He made his first film as a child at the Oaklands Falk School . At the age of twelve he began his career in the theater.

After high school, he began studying at Carnegie Mellon University . He broke up, however, and made his Broadway debut in the musical A Chorus Line in the early 1970s . In 1982 he finished his studies.

After graduating, he moved to New York, where he worked as a singer and dancer in several Broadway plays. After a herniated disc at a performance of the musical Cats at the age of 27, he ended his stage career and began working as a choreographer . In 1993 he received his first award for his work as a choreographer in the Broadway play The Spider Woman's Kiss . In the following years he was involved in many productions. The first time he directed with Sam Mendes in the revival of the play Cabaret .

In 1996 he oversaw the choreography of the television production Mrs. Santa Claus and in 1997 he choreographed the television version of the musical Cinderella . 1999 also directed the successful television film Annie .

His big breakthrough came with his first feature film, the 2002 musical adaptation of Chicago . Marshall received a nomination for Best Director at both the Golden Globe Award and the Academy Awards . The film received a total of six Academy Awards. In 2005 he directed the award-winning drama The Geisha Directed while for his work on the TV Production 2007 Tony Bennett: An American Classic the Emmy in the category director for variety shows, music or comedy series received.

Marshall lives in New York City with his significant other, John DeLuca .
