action

Place and time: Budapest in 1934.
Georg Nowack has been working in Mr. Maraczek's perfumery for fifteen years. He is the first seller, is on the best of terms with the boss and is a guest in his house once a week. Things are different in private life. So Nowack started an anonymous pen friendship through a personal ad and immediately fell in love with the stranger.
It is precisely at this time that his professional luck turns. With the newly hired saleswoman Amalia Balash, he is dealing with a contentious, contradicting, and always late person. In addition, for inexplicable reasons, his relationship with Mr. Maraczek is deteriorating.
In the run up to Christmas there is a debacle. On the day of Nowack's first meeting with his beloved stranger, Miss Balash also has an appointment and insists on wanting to call it a day. Then Maraczek, who is dissatisfied with the state of the decoration work, demands overtime from Nowack. One word gives the other; Nowack loses his temper and quits.
He lacks the courage for the agreed rendezvous in Café Imperial, he actually wants to be denied. But when he sees Miss Balash sitting there, he is so confused that he sits down next to her, whereupon both immediately fall into an argument.
On the same evening, Mr. Maraczek's displeasure with Nowack clears up. Maraczek had a detective spy on his wife. But Nowack is not his wife's secret lover, as suspected, but rather his colleague Kodaly. Maraczek then tries to take his own life in his office.
The second act is more conciliatory. At Mr. Maraczek's sickbed, Nowack is given the management of the perfumery and the order to dismiss Kodaly. Then Nowack takes care of his Amalia, who mourns her dear pen pal, so that the two finally find each other.
