action

A baker and his wife want nothing more than a child. However, this wish is thwarted by the curse of a witch , which came about because the baker's father had robbed the witch's garden. He stole lettuce and magic beans from there. The witch offers the baker and his wife to lift the curse on the condition that the couple bring her four things: a cow as white as milk , a cloak as red as blood , hair as yellow as corn and a shoe off pure gold .

The witch brings the baker and his wife into contact with the boy Hans , who sells his beloved white cow milk white to him, for which the baker gives him some of the magic beans his wife has found earlier and from which a huge beanstalk grows; with Little Red Riding Hood , whose red coat catches the baker's eye; with Rapunzel with her corn-yellow hair, whose tower the baker's wife sees as she walks through the forest; and with Cinderella and her golden shoe, who runs into the baker's wife when she is being followed by a prince .

After several unsuccessful attempts, the baker and his wife finally manage to get hold of all four items to break the curse. Meanwhile all the other fairy tale characters get their " happy ending ": Cinderella marries her prince, Hans takes care of his mother by stealing riches from a giant with the help of his beanstalk , and when he tries to chase him, he cuts through the beanstalk Giant dies. Little Red Riding Hood and his grandmother are saved from the big bad wolf by the baker, and the witch becomes beautiful and young again through a magic potion.

Soon new problems arise: the baker doesn't want to be a poor father to his newborn child, and the witch realizes that she has lost all her magic powers through her youth and beauty.

The wife of the killed giant can climb down over the beanstalk and now wants Hans to be handed over to her to avenge her husband's death. The others are discussing whether they should hand over Hans. In the course of the runaway conversation, Hans' mother is killed. The prince can now seduce the baker's wife. When the prince leaves, she realizes the mistake she made, falls off a cliff and dies. Meanwhile, Rapunzel is able to flee with her prince.

The remaining individuals first all accuse each other of being responsible for the tragedy , and ultimately they all accuse the witch. She throws the leftover beans on the ground and curses those present because they do not want to see their own guilt , and then disappears. The baker, Little Red Riding Hood, Hans and Cinderella kill the giant's wife. The life of everyone is now changed: the baker always thinks of his deceased wife and fears that he will not be a good father for his child, Cinderella, disaffected by the prince who cheats on her, leaves him and from now on helps the baker, and the orphans Hans and Little Red Riding Hood now live with them. The baker now, on the advice of his dead wife, who appears to him, tells the entire story to his little child. It begins with: " Once upon a time ... " and the same words with which he started the film as the narrator.

reception

The film was received mixed to positive. On Rotten Tomatoes , 70% of all reviews are positive.

“The first two thirds of the film, which, like the Brothers Grimm's greatest hits on laughing gas , have a bubbling energy. But as soon as the baker couple's scavenger hunt is over and a raging giant appears, the film loses its magic like an airless balloon. "

- Chris Nashawaty for Entertainment Weekly

"'Into the Woods', a great Disney film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim-James-Lapine musical, instills a new zest for life in the tired marketing concept of entertainment for 'children of all ages'."

- Stephen Holden for the New York Times

"With his fairytale mash-up musical, Rob Marshall breaks the biorhythm of every Disney-socialized viewer: the end comes much too early and is then not even happy."

- David Steinitz for the Süddeutsche Zeitung

Frank Schnelle from epd Film awarded 4 out of 5 stars. He praised the implementation of the Broadway play as a Hollywood spectacle, which made it clear right from the start that “this production will do everything that makes a big - or at least expensive - film”: “a lush, grandiose production design; a lively, imaginative production; The finest tricks; and a cast in the best play and singing mood. ”In addition, one should be“ grateful to the producers that they have preserved the unusual ambivalence of the material. ”
