Anna Cooke Kendrick (born August 9, 1985 in Portland , Maine ) is an American actress and singer .
Life and accomplishments
Youth and career start
Kendrick was born in Portland to Janice and William Kendrick. Her mother is an accountant , her father a history teacher. She attended the local Deering High School. She started acting at the age of ten. She went to New York with her brother, Michael Cooke Kendrick, who is also an actor, and attended a few auditions. Later she was a member of the Cabaret's Kit Kit Club theater company . She played her first role in 1998 as Dinah in the Broadway play High Society . For her performance she was nominated for the Tony Award as the second youngest actress ever nominated for this award . She was also nominated for the Drama Desk Award and received a Theater World Award . She then appeared in numerous plays - including The Little Princess and Jane Eyre - and appeared in the New York City Opera as Frederika in A Little Night Music (2003).
Kendrick played her first role in front of the camera in the television film The Mayor in 2003. In the comedy Star Camp she was seen in her first film role as Fritzi Wagner that same year . In 2004 she was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in the category Best Acting Debut and for the Chlotrudis Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2007, Kendrick played a bigger supporting role than Ginny Ryerson in the comedy Rocket Science . In 2008 she was nominated again for the Independent Spirit Award for best supporting actress. She also had a guest role as Holly in the series Viva Laughlin (2007) .
Breakthrough in the film business
She gained greater fame in 2008 as Jessica Stanley in the film adaptation of the novel Twilight - Bite at Dawn . In 2009 she was able to use her theater and musical experience in the musical comedy The Marc Pease Experience alongside Ben Stiller and Jason Schwartzman . However, the film received mixed reviews and flopped at the American box office. In Germany it was therefore released directly on DVD , as was the thriller Small Town Secret - What happened last summer? , in which Kendrick starred as Sarah in her first lead role .
She finally achieved her breakthrough in 2009 alongside George Clooney and Vera Farmiga in Jason Reitman's tragic comedy Up in the Air , the film adaptation of the bestseller of the same name by Walter Kirn , which was published in Germany under the title Mr. Bingham Collects Miles . Director Reitman wrote her the role, which does not appear in the novel, tailor-made after seeing her in Rocket Science . Her acting performance in the role of Natalie Keener earned her a lot of critical acclaim and a National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress and an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance. She has also been nominated for over thirty other film awards, including the Oscar , the Golden Globe Award , the Screen Actors Guild Award and the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress. In the same year, she repeated the role of Jessica Stanley in New Moon , the film adaptation of the second novel in the Twilight series. Kendrick received nominations for the Empire Award for Best Newcomer and the Teen Choice Award for Best Scene Stealer .
In 2010 she played Jessica again in Eclipse - Biss zum Abendrot . This time her role has been expanded compared to the original book, because the author Melissa Rosenberg wrote a closing speech in the script especially for Kendrick, which does not appear in Stephenie Meyer's novel. Kendrick also starred alongside Michael Cera in the comic book adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. the Rest of the World as Stacey Pilgrim . The film received mostly positive reviews from critics, but it was not a financial success. She also appeared in the music video Pow Pow by the band LCD Soundsystem .
In 2011, Kendrick starred alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt , Seth Rogen and Bryce Dallas Howard in the tragic comedy 50/50 - Friends for Life . The film is about a young radio producer (Gordon-Levitt) who is diagnosed with cancer and is in therapy with the young and inexperienced doctor Katherine (Kendrick). 50/50 met with a positive response from critics and audiences and was nominated for two Golden Globes , among other things . The film was released in Germany in May 2012. She was also last seen as Jessica in Breaking Dawn - Bite at the End of the Night - Part 1 , the fourth film in the Twilight series.
In 2012 she was part of the ensemble of the comedy What Happens When It's Happened by Kirk Jones, along with Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez . The comedy is about five different couples preparing to have a baby. Her partner in the film adaptation of Heidi Murkoff's bestseller was Chace Crawford . She also worked as a voice actress for the first time for the film ParaNorman . The comedy ran in American and German cinemas from August 2012 and received positive feedback. At the Venice Film Festival in 2012 she presented her film The Company You Keep - The Grant Files by Robert Redford . She plays Shia LaBeouf's ex-girlfriend in the thriller, a committed journalist who uncovered the secret identity of a former underground activist. Nick Nolte , Terrence Howard and Brendan Gleeson can also be seen in supporting roles . The film was released in theaters in Germany in July 2013. Kendrick also played Jake Gyllenhaal's wife in the 2012 police thriller End of Watch, directed by David Ayer . In the successful comedy Pitch Perfect (2012) she took on the lead role of the rebellious professor's daughter Beca Mitchell, who discovered her talent as a singer and celebrated success as a singer in a university choir. It can also be heard on the film's soundtrack. In 2013 she was also awarded three platinum records .
In 2013, Kendrick starred alongside Olivia Wilde , Jake Johnson and Ron Livingston in one of the leading roles in the Mumblecore film Drinking Buddies directed by Joe Swanberg and starred in the fantasy comedy Rapture-Palooza . In spring 2013, she stood in front of the camera for the thriller The Voices alongside Ryan Reynolds . The shooting took place in Berlin , among other places .
