When I'm Gone is a traditional American country song that - 80 years after it was first released on vinyl - experienced a renaissance as an internet phenomenon and international chart success in the early 21st century .

The first audio recording of the song was made in 1931 in a performance by the Carter Family .

2009 by the British indie - folk band Lulu and the Lampshades an a cappella -Neufassung under the title You're Gonna Miss Me on the video platform YouTube published, with the rhythm of a popular gossip game with cups (English: Cups ) was highlighted.

The chart success finally brought the adaptation of the Lampshades version by Anna Kendrick in a short scene of the musical film comedy Pitch Perfect . In the following year 2013, Kendrick achieved multiple platinum status in the USA with an extended recording of their cover version, now under the title Cups .

The performances of the Lampshades and Kendricks became the template for many other private YouTube presentations of the cup song .

When I'm Gone (1931)

When I'm Gone , the original version of the song, was collected by AP Carter and arranged for the Carter Family to form a conventionally structured, catchy country song, the melody of the chorus (second, fourth and sixth verse) is closely related to the main melody the song ajar. The song is played at a medium tempo, with Maybelle Carter's guitar lead, which is characteristic of the Carter Family recordings . The six stanzas, each with six verses, are very similar in structure, and the texts also differ little from one another. They consistently vary the core statement You're gonna miss me when I'm gone : The song is a farewell song, addressed to a person who is predicted that they will miss the singer when he (or she) leaves is; the first, third and fifth stanzas vary statements about what exactly will be missing: walking and speaking, prayer and singing as well as general peculiarities of the singing lyrical self . The second, fourth and sixth stanzas are a verbatim repeated refrain.

The song of the Carter Family, in the original line-up with A. P. Carter, his wife Sara Carter and his sister-in-law Maybelle Carter, was recorded for the first time in 1931 at one of the well-known recording sessions of the Victor Talking Machine Company . The work has been covered several times by other country and bluegrass musicians, e.g. in 1937 by JE Mainer with the title Miss Me When I'm Gone , in 1938 by Charlie Monroe as You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone or in 1949 by the next generation of the Carter Family, the Carter Sisters Helen , June and Anita (along with their mother Maybelle).

You're Gonna Miss Me (2009)

In 2009 the English indie folk band Lulu and the Lampshades released the traditional country song of the Carter Family under the title You're Gonna Miss Me in an a cappella version on the video platform YouTube - the video shows the two singers of the Lampshades , Luisa Gerstein and Heloise Tunstall-Behrens, at a fun performance in the unspectacular setting of a private kitchen. In 2011 the song was the B-side of the second Lampshade single, Cold Water .

The Lampshades had supplemented the song with additional text in two new main stanzas, so that now all stanzas of the original version of Carter, shortened and recomposed, resulted in the chorus of their song, the new stanzas, on the other hand, gave the entire song a new content orientation: It is now a charming invitation from the singer to her counterpart to accompany her on an interesting journey:

"I got my ticket for the long way 'round / Two bottle' a whiskey for the way / And I sure would like some sweet company / And I'm leaving tomorrow, wha-do-ya say?"

"I'm going on a long round trip, I have two whiskey bottles of provisions with me, and of course I would like to have someone nice with me, and tomorrow I'm going, what do you think?"

- Luisa Gerstein

Apart from the additional texts and a new melody line for the main verses was the most striking change in the musical composer, Luisa Gerstein to the rhythm of a popular song, the old gossip percussion (English: with cups cups ) underlaid. This version was covered several times by other YouTube users in video publications and developed into an internet phenomenon in the following years. Kevin Rutherford pointed out in an analysis of the history of the cup song that the “the song's participatory nature” accounts for a large part of the success.

Cups (2012)

The playful performance of the Lampshades became the basis of a short scene by the leading actress Anna Kendrick in the musical film comedy Pitch Perfect in 2012 . Until the filming of Pitch Perfect , the version of the Lampshades had already spread in various cover versions on the Internet, but until the title was included in the film's soundtrack it was "only" an Internet phenomenon. The adaptation by Anna Kendrick made the difference: Under the title Cups , the old country song became a phenomenon of mainstream pop culture from 2012.

The surprising success of the song prompted the producers to re-record a version of the cover extended to a good two minutes in early 2013, with a major change in the musical direction: the melody and lyrics of the Lampshades were retained, but Kendrick's vocals were now accompanied by a band. This made the song pop music - and radio-friendly. This version achieved multiple platinum status in the USA , rose to number six on the Billboard Hot 100 , achieved chart successes in other countries and became the template for countless other YouTube videos.

The success of the single was also supported by the fact that Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore had submitted a four-minute music video for the pop version of the title in April 2013 - as in memory of the original YouTube film The Lampshades, a kitchen is the location of the Synopsis: Anna Kendrick plays the assistant in a snack kitchen who sings her song while collecting the used dishes, the guests accompany the melody with the cup percussion. At the end of the video, the little game turns out to be the protagonist's daydream, but the kitchen helper abandons her work and leaves the snack bar through the back door.
