Landshapes (until 2012: Lulu and the Lampshades ) is a rock band from London . The band plays alternative rock with echoes of psychedelic rock .

The formation has four members - Luisa Gerstein (various instruments, especially ukulele , vocals), Heloise Tunstall-Behrens (various instruments, especially violin , vocals), Dan Blackett ( drums and percussion , vocals), Jemma Freeman ( guitar , vocals) - and has played in the same line-up since 2009.

Band history

The band was founded in 2009 by Luisa Gerstein and Heloise Tunstall-Behrens while the two singers were studying at the University of Bristol under the name Lulu and the Lampshades as a folk-pop band.

This group became internationally known by adding new verses and melody lines to an old folk song that was first recorded by the Carter Family in 1931 under the title When I'm Gone . The Lampshades backed their new composition with the rhythm of a gossip and cup game for children and published this under the title You're Gonna Miss Me 2009 on the Internet platform YouTube . The publication became an internet phenomenon and the template for the adaptation by Anna Kendrick in the film Pitch Perfect under the title Cups .

The renaming to Landshapes in 2012 was due to a misprint during a performance in Paris, but it was in keeping with the fact that the band wanted to change their musical direction anyway, towards more experimental rock music. In 2013 the Landshapes released their debut album entitled Rambutan on the indie label Bella Union . The work prompted the critic of the Süddeutsche Zeitung to praise it in the highest tones: "Exciting, fascinating, thrilling, touching, soulful, well-made, skilfully interwoven, superbly constructed".

The group's second album, Heyoon , was released in 2015.
