Bella Union is a British Independent - label , which was founded in 1997 by Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde. The two were previously band members together with Cocteau Twins and had previously released their albums on the British label 4AD before they decided to take a step towards independence and start their own record company Bella Union , with which they now work as well Produce and market all kinds of collaborations according to their own ideas. A short time later, however, the Cocteau Twins broke up, but the former band members Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde continued their collaboration and sold their solo works under this label.

One of the first bands that was signed was the Australian post-rock - trio Dirty Three , publishes today at Bella Union. Other early contractors were Françoiz Breut and The Czars . The label promoted bands from a wide variety of musical genres and soon became known for the high degree of artistic freedom that the bands enjoyed. In 2000 Robin Guthrie withdrew to France to concentrate on his solo projects, so that Simon Raymonde took over the management alone. Since then, more and more extraordinary acts such as Laura Veirs , Lift to Experience and Explosions in the Sky have been signed. 2006 was the most successful year for the label to date, with great hits from Midlake , The Dears , Howling Bells and Fionn Regan . In 2007 the label celebrated its 10th anniversary.
