The Dears is a Canadian indie rock band . It was founded in Montreal in 1995 .

history

The driving force behind the band is singer Murray Lightburn . Lightburn has a reputation for being a perfectionist. This led to numerous line-up changes within the band. He is now the only remaining founding member. In the current line-up, Rob Benvie, George Donoso, Valerie Jodoin-Keaton, Martin Pelland and Natalia Yanchak also play in The Dears, alongside Lightburn.

The band's style is strongly influenced by Europe and is reminiscent of recordings by The Smiths , Serge Gainsbourg and Joy Division .

The band's debut album End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story was released in 2000. In 2001 and 2002 the EPs Orchestral Pop-Noir Romantique and Protest followed , as well as a compilation of previously unreleased songs.

In 2004 the band released their second studio album. With the single Lost in the Plot , The Dears reached the UK single charts for the first time in November 2004 at number 49. In the independent charts, the single even rose to number 4.
