Laura Veirs (* 1973 in Colorado Springs ) is an American singer who lives in Portland , Oregon .

Life

In college , where she studied geology , she began to learn to play the guitar. Today she sings, plays solo guitar and performs with the band "Saltbreakers", which includes drummer Tucker Martine and keyboardist and trombonist Steve Moore. In 2005 she toured North America , Australia and Europe . She also gave concerts in Europe in 2006 and 2007. Saltbreakers , her third album (2007) on Nonesuch Records label , describes Laura Veirs as her most personal to date. This fell at a very intense time in her life, "which was marked by the end of a long relationship and then an unexpected new relationship". Veirs also moved from Seattle to Portland during this time . Her previous band, the “Tortured Souls”, has been renamed “Saltbreakers” with the same line-up, in order to avoid the constant allusions to the old band name.

In a "Supergroup" project founded in 2013, namely Case / Lang / Veirs together with Neko Case and kd lang , an album of the same name was released in 2016 and ended in a major US tour of twenty cities that same year. Since 2005 she has also worked variously as a studio musician and film composer for the film industry. Chronicle Books from San Francisco published a children's book by her in 2018: Libba: The Magnificent Musical Life of Elizabeth Cotten , with illustrations by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. It's about folk music legend Elizabeth Cotten and even won a Parents' Choice Award for literature from the Junior Literary Guild.

style

The concert critic of the Berliner Morgenpost called Veirs' style "Spacefolkpop" and Veirs himself "a somewhat crude contemporary Suzanne Vega ".
