biography

Françoiz Breut went to school in Cherbourg and Caen and lived in Dunkerque and Nantes . There she met Dominique A at the beginning of the nineties , with whom she made her first appearances and recordings as a singer.

Her first album Françoiz Breut (1997) has a minimalist character. It was largely composed and produced by Dominique A; it had some success outside of France. Bands like The Go-Betweens , Tindersticks , Calexico and The Walkabouts expressed their admiration for Breut's unmistakable, brittle but versatile voice. The Walkabouts recorded a version of "Everyone Kisses a Stranger", Calexico tried "Ma colère", and Howe Gelb ( Giant Sand ) dedicated a song to the singer - "Letter to Françoise".

In autumn 2000 the second album Vingt à trente mille jours came out, to which Dominique A, Jérôme Minière , Katerine , Philippe Poirier (Kat Onoma), Yann Tiersen , Pierre Bondu, Gaëtan Chataigner (The Little Rabbits) and Sacha Toorop ( Zop Hopop) contributed. The album's success with critics and audiences made Breut known outside of the independent scene.

In 2003 Calexico recorded a version of "Si tu disais" which is included on the Special Edition of Feast of Wire . In August 2005 she accompanied Calexico on their Germany tour (Konzert Arena Berlin ). On the DVD World Drifts In, a recording of the Calexico concert at the Barbican, London (2004), she sings "Ballad of Cable Hogue" and "Si tu disais" with Calexico.

Her third album Une Saison volée (released in March 2005) was recorded in Brussels, where she had since moved. The compositions originate from a. by Dominique A, Jérôme Minière, Philippe Poirier and the band Herman Düne . Joey Burns from Calexico plays the double bass on several pieces and sings along on one piece (as on Vingt à trente mille jours ).

Françoiz Breut also became known in Germany through the French pop sampler Le Pop 3 (2005); Une Saison volée appeared here on the Le Pop Musik label. In 2008 and 2009 Françoiz Breut performed more often in Germany - partly in collaboration with the Le Pop label and in a double pack with other artists from the current nouvelle chanson scene, such as Marianne Dissard .

She recorded her sixth album Zoo in Bristol. Adrian Utley ( Portishead ) was the producer.

In addition to her career as a singer, Breut works as an illustrator of children's books . She also usually (co) designs her albums.
