The Tindersticks are a British rock band that became famous in the 1990s for their merging of guitar pop and chamber music. The band around singer Stuart A. Staples was formed in 1992 as the successor to the band Asphalt Ribbons in Nottingham . Staples was also the focus of this band as a singer and guitarist. Already in their first phase from 1992 until the band split up in 2003, the use of classical instruments such as strings, percussion and wind instruments was characteristic of the style of this band.

The band celebrated their comeback in 2008 with the studio album The Hungry Saw . Since that time, and also through the soundtracks for cinema films by French director Claire Denis , the musicians have perfected the classical instrumentation of their works. The style of the Tindersticks for the creative period since the new beginning can therefore be characterized as "chamber pop".

history

After the recording of the last Asphalt Ribbons mini-LP Old Horse in 1992, the original line-up of the Tindersticks came together under the new name, which singer Stuart A. Staples had read on a matchbox on a Greek beach. The first demo recordings of the new group followed in the same year - 1992 - the first single Patchwork on the label Tippy Toe Records.

The live performances of the Tindersticks were and are received positively in many cases, as well as their studio albums. After the album Waiting For The Moon , Staples recorded the two solo albums Lucky Dog Recordings 03-04 and Leaving Songs in 2005 and 2006 , which led to speculation about the dissolution of the Tindersticks due to the latter title. On his website, Staples wrote:

“These are songs written on the verge of leaving the things I loved and stepping into a new unknown life, both musically and personally. I was always aware that these songs were the end of something, a kind of closing a circle of a way of writing that I started so long ago and I knew I had to move on from. "

(About:)

“These are songs that were written in a situation where I left behind the things I loved and stepped into a new, unknown life, both musically and personally. It was always clear to me that these songs were the end of something, kind of the end of a circle of writing that I had started so long ago and that I knew I had to move away from. "

In the following year (2007) three of the six original members left the band; the remaining trio recorded the album The Hungry Saw , which was released in 2008.

At the end of January 2010 they released the album Falling down a Mountain on the 4AD labels and the independent label Constellation Records . After that, the band, which had grown into a quintet, founded their own label Lucky dog ; the sound carriers are sold in Germany by the City Slang label .

At the end of 2019 the 13th album No Treasure but Hope was released . The album contains songs "of beguiling beauty tanned in melancholy" and is "one of the really outstanding ones" of 2019, judged Andreas Lüschen-Heimer. Peter Seester, however, found the record "moderate". With him, the band "crossed the red line to kitsch and upscale hits".
