Alexandre-Jacques-Bernard Law, marquis de Lauriston (born February 1, 1768 in Pondichéry , India , † June 11, 1828 in Paris ) was a French Général de division and Marshal of France .

Life

Lauriston was Bonaparte's companion at the Artillery School at Brienne, son of Jean Law de Lauriston and a great-nephew of John Laws . He joined the army in 1785 and was an artillery colonel by 1795. After the 18th Brumaire he was appointed by the First Consul to the General Staff, appointed adjutant in 1801 and soon afterwards promoted to Général de brigade .

Promoted to Général de division in 1805 , he was commissioned to take possession of Venice and Dalmatia , he asserted himself in Ragusa against a significant superiority and became governor-general of Venice after the Peace of Tilsit . In 1808 he joined the army in Spain , fought with distinction in the Battle of Wagram in 1809 and went to Saint Petersburg in 1811 as envoy extraordinary .

In the Russian campaign of 1812 he joined the French army in Smolensk , commanded the rearguard on the retreat and organized the 5th Army Corps in Magdeburg in the winter of 1813 , at whose head he took part in the campaign of 1813. When he was in command of the 5th Corps in the Battle of Leipzig and swam through the river after the bridge over the Weisse Elster had been blown up , he was taken prisoner and taken to Berlin.

Returned to France after the Restoration, he paid homage to Louis XVIII. and was appointed captain-lieutenant of the Mousquetaires gris . During the Hundred Days he withdrew to his estates; became commander of the 1st division of the Guard Infantry after the return of the king, minister of the royal house and marshal in 1820, commanded the 2nd reserve corps during the French invasion of Spain in 1823 and retired from public offices in 1824.
