Jean Law de Lauriston

Jean Law de Lauriston (born October 5, 1719 in Paris , † July 16, 1797 ibid) was a French colonial officer, nephew of John Law and father of Alexandre-Jacques-Bernard Law de Lauriston . From 1764 to 1777 he was French Governor General in Pondycherry . The name of Lawspet, a district of Puducherry, goes back to Jean Law de Lauriston.

During the armed conflicts in the disintegrating Mughal empire in connection with the Seven Years' War , Lauriston, as commander of the French branch in Kasimbazar, set up a mercenary force of approx. 100 men and 10 guns made up of Europeans, with whom he between 1757 and 1760 in the Yamuna - Ganges estuary operated.
