City Slang is a German label based in Berlin . It was founded in 1990 by Christof Ellinghaus and is distributed by Major Universal .

history

Ellinghaus comes from the East Westphalian town of Beverungen . There he wrote the music fanzine " Glitterhouse " with friends (which later became a label of the same name). In the mid-1980s he went to Berlin to study . Here he supervised small bands on tour and founded the agency "Sweatshop", whose first tasks included supervising a tour for the US band Nirvana . Other US bands that he sent on tour in Germany and Europe were Mudhoney , Soundgarden , The Walkabouts , Eleventh Dream Day , Thin White Rope , Urge Overkill and the Flaming Lips .

The latter spoke to him that they needed a label in Europe, whereupon he founded City Slang as a sub-label of the Berlin label Vielklang and has been running it as an independent label since 1992.

The company celebrated the 20th year of its existence in November 2010.

The label represents German, US and Canadian bands in Europe. There is a close collaboration with the Chicago independent label Thrill Jockey and the Canadian label arts & crafts.

Cityslang is a member of the cooperation network of the Berlin music industry Berlin Music Commission .
