Menomena ( mɨˈnɒmɨnə ) comes from Portland (Oregon) , USA . At the end of 2000 the band was founded by Danny Seim, Brent Knopf and Justin Harris. They play a rather bulky indie pop and are compared to bands like The Flaming Lips , Mercury Rev or Sonic Youth .

history

Menomena's debut album was called I Am the Fun Blame Monster , her second album was an instrumental album called Under an Hour and was originally composed as music for a modern dance performance . With her third album, Friend and Foe , Menomena experienced a kind of breakthrough, especially in the USA. In 2007 the album was ranked 49th on the list of the best 50 records of the year in the Musikexpress and received 8.5 out of 10 points at Pitchfork Media . The album received a Metascore of 78 and caused a sensation due to its original packaging designed by comic artist Craig Thompson . The album cover came in 14th in the annual poll of Plattentests.de, despite its rather moderate rating . In July 2010 - after three and a half years of work - their fourth album entitled Mines was released .

On January 7, 2011, Brent Knopf left the band to concentrate on his own projects.

The fifth album, Moms , was released in 2012 and was the first written and recorded by Seim and Harris primarily as a duo. Joe Haege, who already supported Menomena on the Mines tour and also plays with 31Knots and Tu Fawning , was part of the band both during the recording and on the tour that followed.

Side projects

Danny Seim

Drummer Danny Seim has a side project called Lackthereof (spelling: Lackthereøf), with which he has already recorded nine albums, of which only two have been officially released. Seim also founded the Pfarmers group in 2014 together with Bryan Devendorf (drummer at The National ) and Dave Nelson (including St. Vincent & David Byrne , Sufjan Stevens , Beirut ) , whose debut album Gunnera was released in 2015.

Justin Harris

Harris has been the bass player for the British band Bloc Party since 2015 , for which Menomena played as opening act in the USA in 2009.

Brent button

Even when he was still a member of Menomena, Brent Knopf founded the Ramona Falls project , with which the 2009 released a first album entitled Intuit . It consisted partly of pieces that his main band at the time had rejected, but which he wanted to publish anyway. After leaving Menomena, Knopf released another Ramona Falls album ( Prophet ) in 2012 . In 2015 he released an album as EL VY together with singer Matt Berninger from The National .
