The Flaming Lips are an American rock band formed in Oklahoma City in 1983 . The band's music is characterized by a willingness to experiment and a variety of styles.

Band history

After the band was founded, Wayne Coyne's brother Mark was the singer, but was only involved in the recording of the first EP The Flaming Lips from 1984. After Mark Coyne's exit, Wayne Coyne took his place. It followed in 1986 the first album Hear It Is , which was released on the independent label Restless Records. In their early phase, the Flaming Lips had a musical relationship with Mercury Rev , as their guitarist Jonathan Donahue played with the Flaming Lips from 1989 onwards.

After the still guitar-heavy album Clouds Taste Metallic from 1995, the Flaming Lips opened up audible electronic sounds and effects, especially on the album Zaireeka from 1997 - a polyphonic work consisting of four CDs, all of which can be heard simultaneously on different players. As part of this project, a number of happenings such as the parking lot experiment or the ghetto blaster experiment took place: In the parking lot experiment, up to 40 volunteers were given cassettes that had been recorded by the band , which they had to play simultaneously on their car radios in a parking lot . In the ghetto blaster experiment, Wayne Coyne instructed an ensemble of another 40 volunteers to play music recorded by the band in converted ghetto blasters, whereby the participants had to vary volume, speed or key.

Years of touring stress led guitarist Ronald Jones to leave the band in late 1996. In addition, Ronald Jones became mentally ill.

The band achieved their artistic breakthrough in 1999 with the album The Soft Bulletin , which is characterized by an orchestrated sound and philosophical to eccentric texts. From 2001, the Flaming Lips were working on a science fiction film called Christmas on Mars on low-budget -level, which was completed in October of 2005. The film has an experimental character with a cryptic plot and, after having been seen at various film festivals, was released on DVD on November 7, 2008, together with the film music on CD.

In 2002, the band presented their album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots , which received a Grammy award from both critics and buyers . In 2005 the documentary The Fearless Freaks by director Bradley Beesley was released. In addition to the band members and their family members, actors such as Adam Goldberg , Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci also have their say. The band's artistic work and drug problems are discussed. For Yes, I'm a Witch , a remix album by Lennon's widow Yoko Ono released in spring 2007 , the Flaming Lips contributed a reinterpretation of the piece Cambridge in 1969 .

Stage performance

In addition to experimenting with fake blood (especially frontman Wayne Coyne), the band brought in huge, inflatable balls in their stage shows , in which the band members let themselves be rolled over the audience, as well as scantily clad or animal costumed dancers and large amounts of confetti . Until the end of the 1980s, the Flaming Lips set the stage on fire at some performances, threw fireworks into the audience or used fog machines to cover the entire hall in such thick clouds that hardly anyone could see anything. The spectacular stage show of the Flaming Lips was one reason why the group was signed by the major label Warner Bros. Records in 1990 after an employee of that record company witnessed one of the concerts.
