The film is the continuation of the films Spider-Man ( 2002 ) and Spider-Man 2 ( 2004 ). action

Peter Parker has a relationship with Broadway actress Mary Jane Watson and believes he is ready to propose to her. The situation around Peter's friend Harry continues to worsen. He believes that Peter is responsible for his father's death and wants revenge. To satisfy his vengeance, he becomes the new green goblin with modern equipment. During the fight between the two friends, Harry finally falls and is taken to the hospital by Peter. Harry survives, but part of his memory fails, which is why he initially neither remembers that he believes Spider-Man killed his father, nor that his best friend Peter Parker is behind the mask. Thus, the friendship of the two revives for the time being, as it is not hindered by Harry's memory.

Meanwhile, Flint Marko, the real murderer of Peter's uncle Ben, escapes from prison. On the run across a nuclear test site, there is an accident with a particle accelerator, which causes Flint to mutate into a so-called Sandman and now has the ability to dissolve his body in sand and transform it into any shape.

While Spider-Man is very popular with the New York population , Watson is fired after her first appearance due to bad reviews. The relationship is shaken because she has had a hard time coping with this setback, but Parker does not take her problems seriously enough and instead lets the citizens celebrate.

The freelance photographer Eddie Brock is said to take an incriminating photo of Spider-Man on behalf of JJ Jameson in order to get a permanent job at the Daily Bugle. Parker, who also wants to leave his freelance life behind and work hard for the Bugle, tries to prevent this.

Flint successfully uses his powers for his raids in order to raise money for the treatment of his terminally ill daughter. However, Spider-Man is on his heels to seek revenge for his dead uncle and disrupts his raids, but cannot decisively defeat him at first.

One night Spider-Man notices that his costume is changing. An alien life form, a symbiote that crashed in a meteorite in Manhattan , has attached itself to the costume. Although the symbiosis increases his powers, it also begins to change his personality. He consciously puts on the now black Spider-Man costume in order to defeat Flint with the additional power. After first dissolving him in the sewer water, he tells his Aunt May as Peter Parker that the murderer of Uncle Ben was killed by Spider-Man. Aunt May is not enthusiastic about this news, as she has nothing to do with acts of revenge. After that, Peter manages to separate from the symbiote for the time being. Through Dr. Connors learns from Peter that the symbiote uses humans as hosts and that such a connection is difficult to break again after longer contact. Harry, who is still in love with Mary Jane, spends an afternoon with her and is rejected by her after a kiss. Then he regains his memory, threatens Mary Jane to kill Peter and forces her to separate from him. He wants to humiliate Peter and pretends to his friend that he has a relationship with Mary Jane and that this is the reason for the separation. In his desperation, Peter reconnects with the symbiote. Spider-Man is becoming increasingly selfish and vengeful. Peter Parker even goes on a date with Gwen Stacy, the chief's daughter and friend of Eddie Brock. Under the influence of the symbiote, Parker also kills his rival Brock from his job as a photographer at the Daily Bugle when he convicts him of falsifying a Spider-Man photo. Eddie Brock swears revenge. Peter also pays his friend Harry a visit, but this time Peter, influenced by the symbiote, attacks Harry. After Peter successfully humiliated Harry, the latter throws a grenade at Peter, but the latter throws it back again. As a result, half of Harry's face is disfigured.

After Peter Parker accidentally injured Mary Jane in a brief incident in a jazz club, in which he initially humiliated her with a little show, he realizes that he has to part with the symbiote. He succeeds in doing this in a church tower , as the symbiote is sensitive to noise and the ringing of the bell weakens him. Eddie Brock, who was in church to ask Jesus to kill Peter Parker, watches him fight the symbiote. The black mass of the symbiote falls on him, so that he becomes the new host and forms Venom from now on . Flint "Sandman" Marko and Venom team up against Spider-Man to destroy him together. You kidnap Mary Jane as bait, and the final fight ensues.

Spider-Man knows he's not up to the challenge alone and turns to Harry for help. But he still believes that Spider-Man killed his father, and is only persuaded by his butler Bernard, who has been in the service of the Osborns for years and knows that Norman Osborn died by the blades of his own glider because he was cleaned his wounds after his death. When the situation seems hopeless for Spider-Man, Harry rushes to his aid as a goblin, and together they fight the two antagonists.

Harry Osborn sacrifices himself at the last moment for Peter Parker by throwing himself between him and the blades of his glider, which Venom has brought under his control. The symbiote is then destroyed by Spider-Man using an impulse grenade from the goblin, after Spider-Man has separated the symbiote from the weakened Eddie Brock and trapped him between several bars and creates a church bell-like noise on them. Eddie Brock, still possessed by the symbiote's powers, tries to save him in a final act of desperation and jumps towards the grenade, whereupon he and the symbiote vanish in the ensuing explosion. In the end, after learning who Spider-Man is, Sandman apologizes to Peter Parker for the murder of his uncle and explains that it was an accident and that he needed money for his sick daughter. Flashbacks show that Marko had no intention of killing Ben Parker, just needed his car. After the partner grabbed him by the arm, a shot accidentally went off. Spider-Man forgives him, and then Sandman disintegrates and disappears in the form of a sand storm. Peter and the badly injured Harry make up before he dies in the arms of Peter and Mary Jane.

The film ends with Peter and Mary Jane reconciling. It remains to be seen whether the two will become a couple again.

History of origin

Director Sam Raimi on April 30, 2007
Leading actor Tobey Maguire with his wife Jennifer Meyer on April 30, 2007
  • After James Franco announced in an interview that some actors had been hired by director Sam Raimi to re-shoot after the filming was completed, the rumor arose that the film had "failed" in the eyes of the audience during a test screening and therefore had to " be pepped up ”. A few days later, Sony Pictures declared the report false that there had never been a test demonstration.
  • In the comics, the black Spider-Man costume was originally introduced in the Secret Wars miniseries . The idea for the costume came from a fan named Randy Schueller and was bought by Marvel's then editor-in-chief Jim Shooter for $ 220. Author David Michelinie later turns it into the super villain Venom, draftsman Todd McFarlane added the diabolical grin to the original costume design; his successor Erik Larsen finally introduced the characteristic "drooling tongue", which is not present in the film character.

Film music

After the falling out with director Sam Raimi , Danny Elfman , composer of the music for the first and second part, decided not to write the film score for Spider-Man 3 anymore . Raimi then hired film composer Christopher Young for this task. In December 2006, however, it was surprisingly announced that Elfman and Young would suddenly cooperate and work on the score together. The main title , the Spider-Man theme and that of the Green Goblin were therefore retained, Young only composed new themes for Sandman and Venom.

Songs

The theme song Signal Fire is sung by the band Snow Patrol . This makes the British alternative rock group the third interpreter of a theme song from the Spider-Man trilogy, after Chad Kroeger and Josey Scott ( Spider-Man ) and Ana Johnsson ( Spider-Man 2 ) . Kirsten Dunst also contributes the duet Summer Day together with Jason Schwartzman , her film partner from Marie Antoinette (2006) . reception

Press

The most frequently criticized point about Spider-Man 3 is the sparse use of action scenes and the exaggerated interpersonal problems of the main characters, which make up the majority of the very long storyline (140 minutes). ( Star )

The perfectly staged “action aesthetic” ( Tagesspiegel ) with “bombastic special effects” is praised for this . ( Star ) It's fun to fly through the urban canyons with Spider-Man. Christoph Petersen (“filmstarts.de”) is impressed by the animation of the opponent Sandman: “If the producers of Stuart Little raved about the fact that every two million hairs of the little mouse were individually animated eight years ago, you wouldn't want to hear about it think about how many small grains of sand in Spider-Man 3 buzz through the picture in some scenes. "

The lexicon of international film also speaks in its criticism of the "high technical and theatrical level", but criticizes that no "coherent complete work" is offered and the continuation "with all the entertainment value clearly tends to show signs of fatigue".
