Gnaeus Caecilius Simplex

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gnaeus Caecilius Simplex († December 21, 69 in Rome ) was a Roman suffect consul in 69.

Simplex was proconsul of Sardinia in 68/69 . On November 1, 69 he was appointed suffect consul together with Gaius Quintius Atticus . Earlier this year, Simplex had tried to force his way into the highest magistrate at the place of the Aulus Marius Celsus and to buy the consulate with money. But at that time, Emperor Vitellius rejected the applicant. Vitellius later gave the consulate to Simplex without having to buy it. The catastrophe of the overthrow of Vitellius took place under the leadership of these two consuls. The victorious troops of the aspirant to the throne Vespasian oppressed Vitellius more and more. When Vitellius tried to abdicate, he handed Simplex his sword, the symbol of supreme power, which Simplex did not accept. Vitellius was urged by his followers to continue the rule. After the fall of Vitellius, Simplex also came to an end.
