Aulus Marius Celsus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aulus Marius Celsus (* before 69; † in Rome) was a Roman politician and senator in the 1st century AD.

Marius knew how to keep up with all parties. He was a zealous Neronian , closely associated with Galba , adhered to Otho , and succeeded in gaining the special favor of Vitellius . Under Nero he was a legate of the legio XV Apollinaris , first in Pannonia , then in Asia Minor (63). Marius was then appointed by Nero, together with Gnaeus Arrius Antoninus, as suffect consul of the year 69, for the months of July to September.

After the fall of Nero, Galba entrusted him with a special military mission in Illyria . After Galba's death, Marius was in great danger of being killed by the soldiers. Otho saved him with cunning and it did not last long that Otho put his special trust in Marius. Had Otho Marius followed his advice and dragged out the war against Vitellius, he would probably not have been overthrown so quickly.

Although Marius was one of the main leaders of the Ottonian party, Vitellius forgot his early circumstances and immediately accepted Marius among his confidants after Otho's death. So, although enemies tried to blacken him with Vitellius, Marius was allowed to take up the suffect consulate intended for him. Under Emperor Vespasian , Marius became a legate of Lower Germania in 72/73 and then a legate of Syria .
