A simple plan (original title: A Simple Plan ) is a feature film by the director Sam Raimi from 1998 . It is based on the novel of the same name by Scott B. Smith .

action

At the beginning of the film, the main character Hank remembers that he had lived a happy life before the fateful events that are described below. The graduate in business administration works as a financial accountant for a feed mill in a rural area in Minnesota . He has a house and is married to Sarah, a beautiful librarian who is expecting a child.

In winter, Hank goes to his father's grave with his simple-minded brother Jacob to pray on the day of his death. With them is Jacob's rude friend Lou, whom Hank doesn't like. When they have an accident because of a passing fox, Jacob and Lou decide to follow it to the nature reserve and kill it in revenge.

There the three happened upon a crashed sports plane . In the almost completely snowed-up machine, next to the dead pilot, they find a bag with $ 4.4 million in $ 100 banknotes. At Lou's urging, they decide not to report the find, hide the bag and wait. If it turns out that nobody misses the money, they want to split it among themselves after the snow melts in spring. Shortly afterwards, out of stupidity, Jacob reported to the police that he had heard aircraft noises.

At Sarah's insistence, Hank and Jacob return to the scene of the accident the next day, only to leave $ 500,000 there, as, according to their logic, nobody will ask questions if at least some of the money is still there. Jacob, who stands guard while Hank deposits the money on the plane, is surprised by Pederson, the town's hairdresser. He beats Pederson down in a panic. Hank wants to dispose of the supposed corpse, but Pederson regains consciousness. Hank then murders him in order not to arouse suspicion by suffocating him. Hank makes Pederson's death look like a self-inflicted traffic accident.

Lou learns about this murder through the simple-minded Jacob and wants to blackmail Hank with it. After a night of partying, the two of them quarrel; Jacob shoots Lou for threatening Hank, and Hank then kills Lou's wife in self-defense. After that, they make it look like a marital fight and the police believe them.

In the meantime, the alleged FBI agent Baxter arrives in the small town, who wants to be led by Hank to the crash site in the forest. Sarah has since found out that the FBI does not have an officer with that name and that Baxter may be one of the criminals who lost the money. There is a bloodbath at the crash site when Baxter shoots the sheriff and Hank manages to kill Baxter. The rushing Jacob then asks Hank to kill him because he cannot go on with what he has experienced in the last few days. It is only when Jacob threatens to shoot himself on the spot that Hank complies with his request and kills his brother.

To the FBI, Hank puts all the blame for the murders on Baxter, but has to learn that the serial numbers of a large part of the banknotes are known and the FBI is just waiting for the money to be spent to arrest the thief. Fearful and filled with pain about everything that has happened, Hank burns all the money in his fireplace and returns to his old life as a broken man.

IMDb

“Parable about guilt and atonement, temptation and integrity, carried by the differentiated drawing of the main characters and their representational embodiment. Superficially free of religious imagery and symbolism, he traces psychologically ambitious and phenomenologically exactly what it is like when one succumbs to temptation and becomes entangled in guilt, which gives birth to new guilt, murder and manslaughter. "

“'A Simple Plan' convinces with its character representation, suspense and a plot that always has surprises ready without these events falling out of the logic of the story. So worth seeing in every respect. "

"Director Raimi and his screenwriter Scott B. Smith tell their story quickly and ruthlessly to make way for the many psychological overtones of this remarkable, if symbolically overloaded film (this is how black crows herald disaster all the time)."
