James Jacks

James "Jim" R. Jacks (born December 29, 1947 - January 20, 2014 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film producer .

Life

Jack studied at the Carnegie Mellon University , where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, and reached later at the Cornell University the Master of Business Administration .

After graduating, he worked as a financial analyst on Wall Street before attempting a career as a screenwriter. After this failed, he worked from the early 1980s as production manager at Circle Films in Washington, DC , where he coordinated the distribution of Ethan and Joel Coen's Blood Simple (1984) and as executive producer for the Coen film Arizona Junior (1987) acted. He then went to Hollywood, where he worked as Vice-President of Acquisition and later as Vice-President of Production at Universal Studios . At Universal he oversaw the production of Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing (1989). He then worked with Sean Daniel on Field of Dreams (1990). In 1992 he left Universal and founded the independent production company Alphaville Films with Daniel . The duo had their first hits with the production of the John Woo action film Hard Goals and the coming-of-age film Confusion - Summer of the Freaky (both 1993). The Village of the Damned and Mallrats (both 1995), on the other hand, failed both critics and audiences.

Jacks and Daniel then became known primarily as producers of the successful film series about The Mummy , which began in 1999. In 2004 Jacks left Alphaville Films and devoted himself to his own projects.

Jacks died on January 20, 2014 after a heart attack at the age of 66 in his Los Angeles apartment.
