action

Ray Kinsella is a corn farmer and lives in Iowa with his wife Annie and young daughter Karin . His life runs smoothly until one day, while he is working in his field, a quiet, mystical voice sounds: "If you build it, he'll come back."

Ray is confused at first, but then he begins to realize the dream that he does not yet understand himself. He plows in the corn shortly before harvest and builds a baseball field with stands and floodlights. In doing so, he creates a magical place where dreams come true. Long-dead baseball stars come from the rest of the cornfield and train on Ray's field. All players were involved in a bribery scandal 68 years earlier, the Black Sox scandal , and their license to play was revoked, including the legendary "Shoeless Joe" Jackson . However, only Ray and his family can see these players at first.

The mysterious voice answers again and asks Ray: "Alleviate his pain." During a school meeting, Ray finds out who the voice means by "he": the writer and baseball fan Terence Mann. The original book is about JD Salinger , who had also stopped writing since his great literary success in the 1960s and since then has lived in seclusion for decades. Ray travels to Boston and meets the solitary Terence Mann. He persuades him to go to a baseball game together . In " Fenway Park " he and Terence Mann see the lettering "Archibald 'Moonlight' Graham" on the display board after the third hint from the mysterious voice ( "Go to your goal" ). Terence decides to accompany Ray in the search for "Moonlight Graham".

While Ray and Terence are traveling across the States, Ray's farm is on the verge of financial ruin. Arrived in a small town, Ray and Terence ask about Doc "Moonlight" Graham. They quickly find out that the doc has already passed away. They are disappointed in a motel room. While Terence is on the phone with his father, Ray leaves the hotel and meets Doc Graham on the main street. He asks him to his practice and tells him that he was about to become a famous baseball player. Ray tries to persuade him to come to Iowa, but the doc refuses.

The next day, Ray and Terence head back to Iowa. On the street they meet a young hitchhiker. It turns out to be the very young Archie "Moonlight" Graham. The two take him to Iowa, where he is accepted into the team there.

The next day there is an uproar in the stands between Ray and Annie's brother Mark, who bought the mortgage on the farm. During this time, Terence Mann observes the players on the field, as does Karin, who is sitting on the top step of the stands and eating a hot dog. Suddenly Terence advises Ray not to sell the farm and the field. "Ray, people are coming. They will not know why, but they will come and pay the entrance fee because here they will find the peace that they are missing… ” . Mark, on the other hand, cannot see the players and increasingly thinks the others present are crazy.

After a brief scuffle between Ray and Mark, Karin accidentally falls from the stands and lies on the floor, unconscious, motionless and without breathing. Archie Graham faces a difficult decision whether to remain a baseball player or to help the child. He crosses the sidelines and the "old" Doc Graham appears. He frees Karin from a swallowed piece of hot dog and saves her life. But now he can't go back. The players end the game and take Doc Graham into the field. "Shoeless Joe" invites Terence Mann to accompany him. After a short exchange of words with Ray, who cannot understand why Terence and not he is invited, Terence disappears laughing and happily in the corn field like a little boy.

"Shoeless Joe Jackson" now says to Ray "If you build it, he'll come" and suddenly Ray sees a baseball player who is changing his clothes. Ray recognizes in him John Kinsella - his father, with whom he had a very bad relationship. But as young as he appears here on the field, Ray didn't even know him. John congratulates Ray on the great playing field and thanks him for allowing him to play there. They play a round of baseball together.

While the two are playing, the camera moves back and draws the viewpoint over the field with the players in the direction of the street - there you can see a seemingly endless motorcade moving slowly in the direction of the field.

Reviews

  • Heyne Filmjahrbuch 1990: An excellent comedy rich in quotations with a social touch.
  • film-dienst 18/1989: Convincingly played, contemporary Hollywood-style cinema of emotions and longings. The playing field stands as a metaphor for the encounter with one's own dreams and the past, which becomes alive and changeable again. Fairytale entertainment with depth.
