action

Silas, an extremely tainted cannabis user who cultivates cannabis in his apartment , has a great desire to have his own laboratory in order to be able to research his cannabis plants there. His good friend Ivory is of the opinion that Silas should definitely take a university aptitude test in order to be able to study and so one day come to his own laboratory. When Ivory meets a woman over the Internet who wants to watch films with him, he gets cannabis from Silas to avoid falling asleep. When Ivory and Silas later say goodbye on the street, Ivory calls after him that if he falls out of the window with a burning head or is run over by a bus, he will hold his hand over him. He also reminds Silas to take the test again. In the evening, Ivory's appointment comes to see him. Unfortunately, Ivory had sent his date an old photo on which the now existing dreadlocks and a point of hair between the eyes were not yet there. Because she doesn't like it, the lady insults him and runs away. So Ivory watches TV alone and eventually falls asleep with a burning joint in her mouth. The joint that falls on his hair finally catches his whole body on fire. In a panic, Ivory falls out of the window and is run over by a bus. Silas later mixes Ivory's ashes into the soil, in which he plants a cannabis plant.

Two months later, the day of the university proficiency test has come and the cannabis plant is also slowly ripe. Before Silas leaves for the test, he plucks a flower from the ivory plant and takes it with him. In the parking lot in front of the university, Silas is about to smoke a blunt when he notices a boy in the car next to him who is freaking out because his grass has been blown by the car ventilation. This boy's name is Jamal and his mother pushed him to take the test. Silas asks Jamal if he has a blunt, and when that is the case, the two of them smoke it in Silas' car. Suddenly the ghost of Ivory appears in the back seat. Out of panic, Silas jumps out of the car, whereupon Ivory explains to him that you can only see him if you smoke his ashes and that he and Jamal can tell him and Jamal the answers to the test, which thanks to Ivory they both pass with excellent results . Meanwhile, the curators at Harvard University are making trouble for director Philip Huntley because of the few ethnic minorities in Harvard. But he had heard that two African Americans (Silas and Jamal) had passed the proficiency test with excellent results. And so he makes the two of them the offer to study at Harvard, which Jamal and Silas accept.

When Silas and Jamal arrive at Harvard, they get to know Bart, the head of the boat crew, and his girlfriend Lauren, while searching for the financial center. Bart is very conceited and puts them down because of their question about where the financial center is. Jamal then reports to the boat crew to be better than Bart, and Silas stretches Bart from his girlfriend Lauren during the film. Bill, the coach of the boat crew, supports Jamal in this because he doesn't like Bart and especially his parents. At the orientation event, which is being held by Professor D. K. Cain, Jamal and Silas already attract attention and insult Jeffrey, a student, until he leaves the room. Jamal and Silas then move into their room in the dormitory, the so-called Lovell House. Her roommates are Jeffrey, who plays quite a victim role in the film, Tuan, an Asian student, and "INeedMoney", who is Jamal's friend and dumb (but later still talks).

During their stay at Harvard, Silas and Jamal play a lot of pranks on their rivals Bart, the self-proclaimed campus policeman Officer Pickelstein and Professor Cain, who would like them to get out of Harvard as soon as possible. For example, they let Pickelstein's wheel roll in front of a truck, steal a statue of Bart's great-grandfather that is on campus , and feed pigeons that they brought to Cain's office with rice so that they burst. Jamal also meets the daughter of the Vice President of the United States, who also becomes his girlfriend.

In exams, Jamal and Silas always get top marks because Ivory tells them the answers. However, when the two give a costume party at Lovell House, Pickelstein takes the opportunity to search Silas and Jamal's room. There he finds the cannabis plant that Silas and Jamal need to call Ivory and steals it.

Since they are now without Ivory, Silas and Jamal try studying. However, this does not work and in the interim report both have only bad grades. They then decide to fetch a sly corpse from the cemetery and smoke it so that he can help them with the tests. The two of them set off with Jeffrey and dig up a president that Jeffrey has to carry for them. When they get home, they start chopping up the dead man and smoking a finger. Since nothing happens, it is clear that it is not working.

When the situation is already very hopeless, Silas begins to research his truth serum, an experiment that he has been working on throughout the film and whose success would ensure his stay. At the end there is a university party at which Lauren, who is now Silas' girlfriend, is supposed to introduce a historical item. Jamal and Silas, who was able to complete the truth serum, are actually not invited, but through Jamal's girlfriend they still come to the party. Silas throws the truth serum and the rest of the ivory plant (which Pickelstein had brought back bald on the pretext that he had saved her from a burglar) into the fireplace so that everyone inhales the smoke. Lauren announces the item is the first bong made in America. When D. K. Cain denies this, Ivory and Benjamin Franklin 's ghosts appear and Franklin confirms Lauren's findings. Because of the smoke from the burnt ivory plant, everyone can see the ghosts. The director Philip Huntley now announces D. K. Cain, whereupon he storms out of the hall and comes back with an ax with which he attacks Silas. INeedMoney intervenes and so D. K. cuts INeedMoney's jacket. Then INeedMoney shouts "The stupid wanker ruined my clothes" and can finally talk. Silas gets a good grade for his experiment and is allowed to continue studying. Since Jamal has the Vice President's daughter as a girlfriend, he too can stay.

Trivia

  • The film had a budget of 20 million US dollars and played 32 million dollars again.
  • Parallels to the hip hop scene of the 90s cannot be overlooked. "Ivory", which is always smoked in the film, could well be intended as a tribute to West Coast rapper 2Pac , who was murdered in Las Vegas in 1996 . According to an interview, the mother of the murdered Tupac Shakur is said to have said that no one had the right to smoke her son. The Outlawz , friends of the legend Shakur, confirmed in 2011 to have smoked parts of his ashes mixed with marijuana. His title "Black Jesus" contains the text "Last wishes, niggas smoke my ashes" which was understood as a direct request.
  • Hip-hop group Cypress Hill made a guest appearance at a party.
  • The film is televised under the title American High - Trying Before Studying .
  • According to Redman at the Splash! In 2007 a second part is now in production. According to a further statement by Redman, a production of How High 2 fails to Universal Pictures , as they hold the trademark rights for film and character names.
  • In the film, Jamal brings out his own clothing brand under the name BUFU, which is later also worn by the head of the rowing team. During the film it is explained that BUFU stands for "Buy Us, Fuck U". This is a reference to the American clothing brand FUBU ("For Us By Us").
