Amy Madigan (born September 11, 1950 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American actress .

Life and accomplishments

Madigan studied philosophy at Marquette University , piano at the Chicago Conservatory, and acting at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute . She made her debut in an episode of the television series Hart but cordially from 1981. In the film drama Love Behind Bars (1982) she played the lead role of prisoner Terry Jean Moore , who falls in love with a prison guard and has a child by him. For this role, she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Young Actress in 1983 . The supporting role at the side of Gene Hackman in the love drama Twice in a Lifetime (1985) brought her an Oscar nomination in 1986 and the second Golden Globe nomination. In the comedy The Prince of Pennsylvania (1988) she played alongside Fred Ward and Keanu Reeves , for which role she was nominated for the 1989 Independent Spirit Award .

In the television drama Roe vs. Wade (1989) played Madigan alongside Holly Hunter . For this role, she was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1989 and won the Golden Globe Award in 1990. In 1998 she was nominated again for the Independent Spirit Award for her role in the drama Abused Love (1997) with William Hurt and Sean Penn . The roles in the war drama A Bright Shining Lie - Die Hölle Vietnams (1998), in the film drama Just a Dream (2002) and in the television series Carnivàle (2003 to 2005) each earned her a nomination for the Golden Satellite Award .

Madigan appeared at the Los Angeles Theater Center in the play Stevie Wants To Play The Blues , for which she won the Drama Logue Award .

Madigan married Ed Harris in 1983 , with whom she has a daughter, who was born in 1993.
