action

The focus of the series is the mysterious and cunning professor at Middleton Law School, Annalize Keating, who also works as a successful criminal defense attorney. At the university she teaches the course “Introduction to Criminal Law” or, as Annalize calls it: “How to get away with murder” (in the original: “How to get away with murder”). The extremely charismatic and manipulative Keating uses her talents mercilessly in the auditorium and courtroom . From the students in her class, she selects five who she considers highly ambitious to help her defend her clients. The chosen are Wes Gibbins, Michaela Pratt, Laurel Castillo, Connor Walsh, and Asher Millstone - highly intelligent students ready to do anything to impress Keating and win their famous trophy, presented to whoever does the Annalize most impresses and provides critical information that has a positive impact on legal proceedings. In the course of the series, she and her five chosen ones are involved in several murder cases.

main characters

Annalize Keating
Annalize is a professor at the prestigious Middleton Law School and is also a renowned lawyer and criminal defense attorney. She is famous for the fact that she almost never loses a case. She gives everything for this and sometimes overlooks the fact that she is saving clients who she knows are guilty of from punishment. She does not shy away from manipulating and blackmailing witnesses or defendants into lying in the courtroom. Your ambition to always want to win seems like an addiction at times. In the course of the series, however, it also becomes clear how much she stands up for others, which creates a more balanced picture of her personality. Annalize, who is actually called Anna Mae, comes from a poor background herself and has made it to the top with a lot of work and a strong will. She lives with her husband Sam, whom she doesn't trust and whom she cheats with Police Detective Nate. Annalize's relationship with her husband also began as an affair while Sam was still married. Sam also has several affairs during his relationship with Annalize. Outwardly, she is tough, self-confident and serene, as someone who always has the perfect solution ready, but some people like Sam and her mother also experience her from her vulnerable, secretly desperate side.
Wes Gibbins
Wes was admitted to the course at the last moment through the waiting list and is therefore taken less seriously by his fellow students. His ingenuity, however, quickly attracts Professor Keating's attention. So he becomes one of the five selected Keating students who are allowed to work closely with the lawyer. Since only four places were actually planned, the others like to call him “the successor”. He's also the only one who doesn't come from a privileged family. Wes found out beforehand by accident that Keating is having an affair with a detective and believes that Keating took him in for fear that he might betray her. He later finds out that Keating stood up for him out of guilt as she felt responsible for his mother's death. He later enters into a relationship with his neighbor, Rebecca, who has been a suspect in a homicide case for several weeks.
Connor Walsh
Connor is very self-confident and is used to getting everything he wants. He is homosexual and often uses his good looks and sexual acts to get the information necessary for Keating's cases. He would do anything to convince Professor Keating of himself. He had a sexual relationship with Michaela's fiancé in high school and isn't afraid to tell her about it. Some scenes suggest that behind the confident facade there is a vulnerable person.
Rebecca Sutter
Rebecca, a drug dealer, lives in the apartment next to Wes. She has built a protective layer around her emotions and initially rejects Wes too, until Wes finally wins her trust. Their protective reaction is to scare off people with their harsh, gruff and disinterested manner. The truth is, she is very vulnerable. In an interview with Sam she mentions that she has already been psychologically evaluated in the youth prison and assessed as a person "with an above-average IQ and a strong tendency to paranoia".
Michaela Pratt
Michaela, a delicate, pretty student from a good family, sees Professor Keating as a role model and wants to be just as successful as she, also because she thinks she is better than the other students. She wants to prove herself; this often makes it too ambitious, almost desperate. You can tell that up to now she has lived like in a soap bubble, because at the beginning she disrupts everything that does not go according to her ideas. She distinguishes herself through her fiancé Aiden. When she learns from Connor that Aiden had a homosexual relationship with him in the past, she is deeply shocked. Still, she doesn't end the engagement so as not to endanger her perfect future. At the end of the first season, Aiden and Michaela split up.
Asher Millstone
Asher comes from a very privileged family background (his father is a federal judge) and is accordingly self-confident. To others he appears arrogant and childish, even though he has a good heart. He is seen by the others in the group as a know-it-all. Sometimes he enjoys mocking other people (especially his competitors) in order to make them insecure.
Laurel Castillo
Laurel, also from a good family, is rather quiet and idealistic. Through her studies, she wants to help people in need. Her competitors and fellow students underestimate her at the beginning. She feels sexually attracted to Frank, but also has a friend (Kan) who works for Legal Aids.
Frank Delfino
Frank works for Professor Keating, but is not a lawyer, but rather "the man for the rough". He often does jobs for her that are particularly confidential or illegal, and helps her through his many contacts. He likes to get involved with pretty students, but Laurel is particularly fond of him. His loyalty to Annalize is as great as their trust in him; in a conversation between Bonnie and Laurel, Bonnie describes Frank as part of Annalise's family.
Bonnie Winterbottom
Bonnie is a support lawyer for Keating, helping her work on current cases and with administrative tasks. During Keating's absence, she keeps a close eye on the students. Keating's methods don't always get her full approval, but she's loyal to Keating. You can tell that Bonnie is dependent on Keating, just like Keating on her, although she does not want to admit that and therefore often defames her. Bonnie endures this without contradiction, in large part because of her deep respect for this woman, to whom she arguably owes a lot, and partly because of their shared past, in which they have always been in the subordinate position. However, she also developed her love for Sam, which is what made Annalize not trust Bonnie completely.

Episode list

reception

The serial junkies critic Felix Böhme awarded 3.5 out of 5 stars for the pilot episode. In his review he wrote the following:

“The pilot episode marks a very decent start to the new ABC series, in which a well-tempered Viola Davis clearly takes the reins and with her acting performance can hide rather inconspicuous performances from individual members of the cast. The prerequisites for entertaining and captivating television entertainment are in any case given and make 'How to Get Away with Murder' a positive new release. "

- Felix Böhme : Serienjunkies.de

“Mercilessness is a stylistic device in How to Get Away with Murder - and it is not always properly dosed: Some characters seem extremely overdrawn. […] But above all the character of Annalize Keating makes the series worth seeing. Seldom has a serial lawyer been so mercilessly ambitious, unscrupulous and at the same time vulnerable. And an African American as the protagonist of a lawyer series was long overdue anyway. "
