Jimmy Smits (born July 9, 1955 in New York City , New York ) is an American actor .

Life and accomplishments

Jimmy Smits' father comes from the Dutch colony of Suriname and is of Dutch descent, his mother from Puerto Rico . He graduated in 1980 at Brooklyn College theater studies and acquired in 1982 at the Cornell University the title of Master of Fine Arts .

Smits made his debut on the television series Miami Vice in 1984 . In the comedy These Two Unbelievable (1986) he was seen alongside Billy Crystal , Joe Pantoliano and Dan Hedaya . For his appearances on the LA Law series from 1986 to 1991, he received the Viewers for Quality Television Award in 1990 and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in 1991 . In 1990 he won the Emmy Award , for which he was also nominated in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991 and 1992.

In the fantasy comedy Switch - Die Frau im Manne (1991) he played the role of Walter Stone , Steve Brooks' friend or Amanda Brooks ( Ellen Barkin ). For the lead role in the film drama My Family (1995), in which one of the supporting roles was cast with Jennifer Lopez , he was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in 1996.

From 1994 to 1998 Smits had one of the leading roles in the television series NYPD Blue and won the Golden Globe Award for this role in 1996, for which he was nominated again in 1997 and 1999. In 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999 the nomination for the Emmy Award took place again. In 1998 and 1999 he won the ALMA Award . In 1995 he was able to win a Screen Actors Guild Award together with the rest of the ensemble and was nominated for this in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999.

From 2004 to 2006, Smits played the Democratic presidential candidate Matt Santos in the television series The West Wing . For this role he won the Imagen Foundation Award in 2005 and was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award in 2006. He was also featured in the crime series Dexter . In 2009 he received his 12th Emmy nomination for his guest appearance as Miguel Prado on the episode Go Your Own Way .

Smits was married from 1981 to 1987 and has two children.
