action

Sylvia is left by her husband Daniel for another woman after twenty years of marriage. Her friend Bernadette then founds a "Jane Austen Book Club" with which she would like to give Sylvia other thoughts. In this club, the six novels of the British writer Jane Austen are to be discussed. Six novels, six members. Sylvia's best friend, single and dog breeder Jocelyn, brings her coincidentally known Grigg as the only man into the group. His only motivation for membership is to score points with Jocelyn and get to know her better. Sylvia's lesbian daughter Allegra only joins the club for the sake of her mother. The unhappily married French teacher Prudie, who runs the risk of starting a relationship with one of her students, is sixth in the round. The club members meet monthly to discuss one of Austen's works. Gradually it becomes clear that the love life of the individual club members coincides with the storylines of the novels.

Reviews

Several film magazines complain about this comedy that the film essentially requires knowledge of Jane Austen's life's work in order to understand all the allusions and characters of this film.

"Conclusion: Shallow feel-good romance with a strong ensemble - of which little remains without prior knowledge."

“Conclusion: A lot of small aside notes only make sense once you have read the books. It can easily lead to confusion if one cannot assign the heroes of the novel in the discussions and thus does not understand the references to the novels. "

- Zelluloid.de

"The film, which is largely shallow despite a few beautiful moments, wants to touch the audience's emotions by all means, but largely lacks the subtlety of the author to whom the film and its characters feel committed."
