John Calley

John Calley (born July 8, 1930 in Jersey City , New Jersey , † September 13, 2011 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film producer.

Life

After serving in the US Army, Calley first worked as a postal worker for the US television station NBC in New York City . After various activities, worked for the production company Filmways in the early 1960s. In 1969 he moved to Warner Brothers , where he eventually became chairman. In 1980 he left the company and in 1993 he became Chairman of United Artists . Three years later, he took over the management of Sony film production . In 2003 Calley retired, but continued to work as a producer.

For the production of the film What Was Left of the Day , Calley was nominated for an Oscar in 1994 in the category Best Picture . He also received a nomination at the BAFTA Film Awards .

In 2009 he was honored with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award . The Los Angeles Film Critics Association presented him with the Career Achievement Award the year before .

From 1995 to 2002 Calley was married to actress Meg Tilly . A first marriage with Olga Schoberová , who also worked as an actress, lasted from 1972 to 1992.

Calley was the father of a daughter.
