The adult Jimmy marries Isabel, who fled El Salvador . Jimmy and Isabel have a son.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film touched audiences who were made to laugh as well as cry. The director Gregory Nava has a "clear vision", every scene has "meaning", the plot is "solidly constructed".

Roger Ebert compared the film in the Chicago Sun-Times on May 3, 1995 with a family reunion. It shows the story of the Sanchez family in an epic breadth, in the good as well as in the bad times, which is told in “startling beauty” pictures.
