Life

Anna Thomas was born in Stuttgart. Her family came from Poland. As a child, she moved to the United States, where she grew up in Michigan and California . She studied film at the University of California in Los Angeles , where she obtained a Master of Fine Arts.

During her student days, Thomas wrote her first cookbook with vegetarian recipes. It was published in 1972 by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. under the title The Vegetarian Epicure and sold over a million copies. It has been reprinted twelve times and translated into several languages.

In 1973 she worked with her fellow student Gregory Nava (* 1949) on a film project. They got married two years later. Then came their first film together, the dramatic romance The Confessions of Amans , in which both wrote the script and Nava directed. The film won a Hugo Gold at the Chicago International Film Festival in 1975 . A long-term professional collaboration between the couple began.

In 1978 Thomas published another cookbook, the equally successful follow-up volume The Vegetarian Epicure, Book Two . With the proceeds from this she produced the horror film Visit from the Beyond , set in Scotland, which she also directed and wrote the screenplay.

Together with her husband, who worked as a director and screenwriter, Thomas produced the film El Norte in 1983 . It was nominated for an Oscar in 1985 for Best Original Screenplay.

In 1984 and the following year, Thomas and Nava had two sons. In 1985 the family moved to a ranch in the small town of Ojai, California . Three years later, the spouses began working again on joint film projects with the war drama A Time of Destiny . My family followed in 1995 , with Thomas reappearing as a producer and screenwriter. The following year her book The new Vegetarian Epicure appeared with simpler and less high-calorie recipes that are put together for menus . In 2002 she wrote the script for the Mexican film Frida with Nava .

Thomas has been leading workshops for scriptwriters at the American Film Institute since 2001 . Meanwhile divorced, she produced her first documentary in 2008 and published her fourth cookbook with a focus on soups the following year . Love soup received a 2010 James Beard Foundation Award in the Healthy Focus category.
