Ojai [ oʊhaɪ ] is a small town in Ventura County in California ( USA ).

The city is located about 110 km northwest of Los Angeles and about 20 km north of the Pacific coast . It lies between Santa Paula in the southeast and Ventura in the south in a valley that is bounded in the north and northeast by the Topatopa Mountains ( Hines Peak up to 2047 m high). The valley is mainly used for oranges.

Ojai has around 8000 inhabitants ( 2004 ). Ojai is primarily a dormitory city for wealthier citizens in the Los Angeles area. Ojai was founded in 1874 as Nordhoff . It was named after the journalist Charles Nordhoff from Germany, who had reported positively about California. The name was changed to the present one during the First World War in 1917. Ojai means moon in the Chumash language .

Culture

Ojai's cultural life revolves around ecology , health and organic farming , walking / hiking , spirituality , music and applied arts . In addition to hippies and new-age shops, classic cars and motorcycle clubs also play a role thanks to the mild climate . (In 1999, Pete Conrad , the third person on the moon , died after a motorcycle accident in Ojai.)

The Ojai Music Festival offers each year a stage for musicians and composers of international standing, including since 1947 Igor Stravinsky , Aaron Copland , Esa-Pekka Salonen and Pierre Boulez , who headed the festival of 2003.

The open-air bookstore Bart's Books, which has existed since 1964, has already been the subject of numerous reports and documentaries.

Ojai was the "hometown" of the seven million dollar woman .

In 2010, Ojai was the location of Will Gluck's teenage comedy Easy to Have with Emma Stone and Stanley Tucci .
