Sergio Aragonés Domenech (born September 6, 1937 in Sant Mateu , Castellón de la Plana , Spain ) is a cartoonist who was best known for his cartoons in MAD magazine .

After his family emigrated to Mexico from Spain, Aragonés studied architecture at the University of Mexico . Even during this time he was always drawing cartoons and published them in the school newspaper, among other things.

In 1962 he went to the USA , where he soon became a permanent employee of MAD magazine in New York .

Sergio Aragonés' cartoons are known to say a lot without text and explanations. Most of them are comic situations. In addition, Aragonés has a great talent at being able to represent celebrities and film stars recognizable with just a few lines, for example in the Star Trek parodies.

He also produces a number of "marginal drawings"; small cartoons, which are printed horizontally or vertically in the MAD magazine on the edge of the pages next to the articles.

Aragonés' best-known works apart from MAD include the comic series Groo the Wanderer , which has also appeared in German-speaking countries at times. In 1980 Aragonés developed the figure of the simple-minded barbarian Groo. In 1982 the first issue was published by Pacific Comics , after several changes of publisher the series is currently published by Dark Horse Comics .

In the meantime, Aragonés also worked for Bongo Comics . There the Sergion Aragonés Funnies and the category "Maggie's World" appeared in the Bart Simpson comics .

Publications in Germany

Aragonés' own comic series Groo the Wanderer only had nine German editions in the 1980s and three anthologies in the late 1990s. His other work was published in Germany mainly in the context of the various publications of the German MAD . Currently only the anthology MADs great masters: Sergio Aragonés is available, all other publications are only antiquarian.
