June Allyson (1953)

June Allyson (born October 7, 1917 in New York City , † July 8, 2006 in Ojai , California ; actually Ella Geisman ) was an American actress .

Life

June Allyson was already working on Broadway in the late 1930s . She had her breakthrough as a singer in the musical Best Foot Forward 1941, which brought her a contract with MGM and the leading role in the film version of the same name of the revue. Her slightly rough voice and a pleasant screen personality helped her to become enormously popular in a short time, and the studio liked to use her alongside Van Johnson in light romances and lavish musicals . After her image as a girl next door went out of fashion towards the end of the 1940s, she switched to the subject of the skilled wife, who, despite all odds, stays with her husband. She was a popular actress of friendly ladies until the mid-1950s and celebrated a worldwide success as the wife of Glenn Miller (played by James Stewart ) in The Glenn Miller Story in 1954 . In 1956, she frightened her fans in the role of the neurotic, malicious wife of José Ferrer in The Shrike . The critics, however, rated the film unanimously positive. A few years later she retired from the big screen to embark on a successful career as an entertainer in exclusive nightclubs in Las Vegas . She was married to actor Dick Powell from 1945 to 1963 . In 1972 she returned to the big screen as a lesbian killer in They Only Kill Their Masters .
