Best Foot Forward is a musical produced by George Abbott and premiered under his direction on October 1, 1941 at the Ethel Barrymore Theater in New York .

Written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane , the score is influenced by barrelhouse , boogie woogie and blues . The book is by John Cecil Holm ; Gene Kelly choreographed the dance . The show featured some young talent: June Allyson , Nancy Walker , Stanley Donen , Danny Daniels .

Best Foot Forward was filmed in 1943 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer with a slightly different plot. In one of Arthur Whitelaw co-produced in 1963 Off-Broadway - Revival had the seventeen year old Liza Minnelli her first professional appearance in New York. Martin and Blane added new songs for each of these adaptations.

As a joke, Bud Hooper invites Hollywood star Gale Joy to accompany him to the “Winsocki prep school” prom. Gale's agent Jack Haggerty advises her to accept in order to get her career back on track with such a high-profile appearance. The completely surprised Bud makes the mistake of his friend Helen Schlesinger, under false pretenses, to cancel this evening. Of course, Helen finds out about it and causes a scandal at the party, at the end of which Gale Joy only stands on the floor in underwear.
