Gregory Nava (* 10. April 1949 in San Diego , California as Gregory James Nava ) is an American film director , screenwriter and film producer . He became internationally known through the films El Norte , My Family , Selena - An American Dream and Bordertown .

life and career

Gregory Nava was born in San Diego, California in 1949. He attended UCLA film school in Los Angeles and made his directorial debut in 1972 with the short film The Journal of Diego Rodriguez Silva . Nava has been involved in various functions in the film business since the mid-1970s. For the romantic drama The Confessions of Amans in 1976, he took over the role of director, screenwriter and co-producer alongside Anna Thomas . In addition, he took on the role of cameraman and, once, of the cutter. In 1983 the adventure drama El Norte came into being, where he sat back on the director's chair and also worked on the script. In 1985 he and the screenwriter Anna Thomas received an Oscar nomination in the category Best Original Screenplay . In 1988 he directed the war drama A Time of Destiny with William Hurt and Timothy Hutton in the leading roles . In 1995 he directed the movie My Family with the cast of Jimmy Smits , Esai Morales and Edward James Olmos . In 1997 he directed the music film Selena - An American Dream with Jennifer Lopez as the leading actress . In 2006 he worked again with Lopez for the crime drama Bordertown .

In addition to directing, Gregory Nava also worked as a screenwriter on films such as The Awakening and Frida . Gregory Nava directed 11 times during his career, took on the role of producer and also wrote most of the scripts for his films himself.
