Why Do Fools Fall in Love - The roots of rock 'n' roll (Original title: Why Do Fools Fall in Love ) is an American biopic from 1998 . Directed by Gregory Nava , the screenplay was written by Tina Andrews .
action
The film begins with the death of Frankie Lymon , after which the singer Zola Taylor, the impoverished Elizabeth Waters and the teacher Emira Eagle claim to be the musician's widow. The women are fighting a lawsuit over royalties .
The life of the deceased is shown in flashbacks. Lymon began his musical career in the mid-1950s, at the age of 13. He had a hit in 1956 with the song Why Do Fools Fall in Love . Lymon becomes a drug addict and dies years later. At the end of the film, Lymon's properties are first taken over by Waters, but then handed over to Eagle by a court order.
Reviews
James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the highlights of the film were the depictions that would make the screen explode with “directness and energy”. Larenz Tate is "perfect" in the role of Frankie Lymon. His portrayal brings a mixture of "playful sexuality" and innocence that women would find irresistible. Halle Berry, Vivica A. Fox and Lela Rochon would have little problems portraying their characters within a period of 30 years. The film structure with numerous leaps in time and flashbacks means that the viewer remains involved for a full two hours.
Awards
Gregory Nava won the ALMA Award in 1999 ; the actors Miguel A. Nunez junior and Alexis Cruz were nominated for the same award. Larenz Tate won the Acapulco Black Film Festival's Black Film Award in 1999 , for which the script and soundtrack were also nominated.
background
The film was in Los Angeles , in Jacksonville ( Florida ) and Strong turned (Florida). Its world premiere took place on August 8, 1998 at the US Urbanworld Film Festival . On 28 August 1998 demonstrations began in the cinemas of the USA, in the film about 12.4 million dollars grossed.
